Vin Diesel Is Playing Groot In Guardians Of The Galaxy After All

Possibly the worst kept secret among the next wave of Marvel super hero movies was made official on Saturday, as Marvel Studios confirmed that Vin Diesel will be playing Groot in “Guardians of the Galaxy”—or to be more precise, Diesel will be providing the voice of and motion capture for Groot, since the big alien tree is going to be a CGI creation.

This isn’t really news in the sense that it was rumored all along. Marvel tried kind of sort of denying it for a bit, but Groot was the one role in the film that hadn’t been officially cast, and since Diesel was known to be talking to Marvel about one of its “Phase 3” movies, it just made sense.

How much talking will Diesel actually get to do? That’s a good question, since Groot isn’t exactly the most eloquent of characters. There have been rumors he has as little as one line of dialogue, but that seems like a waste for a semi-big name like Diesel. If it is just a single line, put money on it being “I am Groot!” Just trust us on that.

He should get to kick some butt in virtual fashion, and that’s one thing Vin does do well. We’ll get to see in less than eight months, as “Guardians of the Galaxy” blasts into theaters on August 1, 2014.
