Let’s Talk Captain America: The Winter Soldier

It’s the Marvel movie that kicks off the summer blockbuster season a month earlier than normal; Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release on April 4. The trailer has fans chomping at the bit to see it.

Scarlett Johansson sat down with Huffington Post to talk about a bunch of things that included some Captain America 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

With how sequels usually play out in the movies, most people expect somewhat of a mess (think Iron Man 2).  But what we’re privy to in the trailer for Captain America makes me extremely excited. And the comment I keep hearing from people everywhere is: “Man, that clip of Cap in the elevator…”

When asked how Iron Man 2 and Captain America differ, Johansson gave this answer:

"My first Marvel film was “Iron Man 2” and then we did “The Avengers” and then Chris Evans and I did “Cap 2,” but I think that film, there’s a couple of new characters. The Falcon [played by Anthony Mackie] is a new character in that, and of course Sebastian Stan is kind of continuing his character, obviously he’s playing the Winter Soldier. But these characters really kind of take on something bigger than they’ve ever seen, so I think it’s something that they can’t do without each other. In that sense, we were in it, kind of neck-and-neck, and it’s a bigger responsibility."

So… she doesn’t give us much that we didn’t already know. Except for maybe the fact that everyone will have relatively equal screentime–as in, Black Widow won’t just be in two or three scenes. As the leading lady of this movie and all the kicking ass she did in Avengers, we would expect a lot more of her anyway.

The first Captain America helped set up The Avengers and everything I’ve read states that The Winter Soldier is really going to pave the way into Age of Ultron. Here’s a summary from ComicBookMovie.com:

"After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier."

Sounds entertaining, right? Especially if Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will somehow tie into this (it has the potential–the way S.H.I.E.L.D. is portrayed in the TV show makes it seem like they’re on the verge of something coming from within). More Black Widow will also please the masses–her and Captain America had some good fight scenes together in The Avengers, though nothing can top her and Hawkeye working together. The Falcon looks like he’ll be great, too, and everyone seems to love Sebastian Stan. Add in the likes of Robert Redford and there’s great potential for some magic.

I know the first Captain America wasn’t the most popular of the Marvel movies, but there was something about it I just loved. Maybe it was the fact that I love the 1940s era, maybe it was the wholesome character of Steve Rogers. But everything that made that movie more quaint seems to have been left behind in New York with the defeated Chitauri.
