Warner Bros., Sony Join Forces For Superman/Spider-Man Movie

Over the last few years, we’ve seen the Dark Knight and Amazing Spider-Man movies pull in some terrific box office numbers, but overall, Marvel has ruled the roost with its cohesive vision for super hero movies. Now it appears the other studios with a stake in comic book genre films may have devised a way to fight back.

Unconfirmed reports out of Hollywood suggest that Warner Bros. and Sony are ready to announce that two of their biggest guns will appear together on the big screen. A source is telling Bam! Smack! Pow! that a crossover pic featuring both Superman and Spider-Man will be revealed soon, with shooting to begin “pretty darn quick.”

Details are sketchy at this point, but it’s presumed that both Andrew Garfield and Henry Cavill will sign on to play their respective roles as Spidey and the Man of Steel. It’s not known what plot device will be used to get the heroes together or what villains they’ll face, though the names we’re hearing under consideration right now include Big Wheel, Kangaroo, Toyman and Prankster.

One thing that is more clear is that most of the action will be set in Spider-Man’s New York.

“Well, we couldn’t really set it in Metropolis, seeing as Superman casually destroyed most of it fighting Zod in Man of Steel,” the source said to BSP.

Warner Bros. and Sony will share the distribution duties and profits 50/50 and each studio will take top billing in different markets. It’s rumored that while there was a discussion about calling the film Superman/Spider-Man in some countries and Spider-Man/Superman in others, the former eventually won out, with Warner reasoning that it actually owned the rights to its character while Sony was simply “borrowing” the rights to the wall-crawler.

Superman will win in the inevitable misunderstanding between heroes that turns into a fight as well.

“Andrew is fine with that because Henry is so delightfully British,” the source said.

Pressed on whether or not the marriage of Marvel and DC characters could work on the big screen, the source mentioned a crossover event that all comics fans remember fondly.

“Yeah, the studios think it’ll be great,” he said. “After all, just look how fantastic DC/Marvel: All Access turned out! They’ve even got a catchy name to describe the venture: the DSonyC Cinematic Universe. I think it’s pronounced ‘de-sonic’ but I’m not sure on that.”

BSP tried reaching out to Warner Bros. for comment, but all a studio rep would say is “Suck it Marvel!” before giving a D-Generation X crotch chop and running away cackling.

When the source was asked for a potential release date, his answer was straight and to the point.

“April 1st” he said. “Yeah, definitely April 1st.”
