Skottie Young Unleashes Rocket Raccoon In His Own Ongoing Series On July 2

Forget the fact that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is coming out in theaters in August. Even if that wasn’t the case, the time is just right for an ongoing series starring the breakout character of that team.

I’m talking, of course, about Rocket Raccoon (even though he’d prefer you not call him that). The foul-mouthed and heavily-armed but generally good-hearted space hero is ready to strike out on his own in Rocket Raccoon #1, which is being written and illustrated by Eisner award-winning creator Skottie Young. And while he’s bailed the galaxy out on more than one occasion in the past, Rocket could have his paws full with what unfolds for him in his very first issue: an intergalactic boxing match, a team of his ex-girlfriends menacingly calling themselves the Exterminators, and being framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

Young also hinted readers will see a more reflective side of Rocket, though probably not for long!

“Despite Rocket’s attitude and antics he has a heart under there,” Young said in an interview with Marvel.com. “He has some things he may or may not want to need in his life. He’s going to have to examine that. When you’re believed to be the last of your kind left in this galaxy or all the galaxies, that’s something you carry with you. That plays a role in the way you operate. We’ll see him explore that a little bit. But ya know, right after that he’ll probably shoot some stuff.”

Peep some of Young’s work below and the variant covers by Young, Peterson and Leonel Castellani, and watch for Rocket Raccoon #1 to blast its way into your LCS and onto digital on July 2.
