On Monday night, Marvel’s big-wigs were out to see the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California.  With so many top-level decision-makers present, Marvel Entertainment’s online reporter was able to speak to Steven S. DeKnight, the showrunner for Netflix’s Daredevil.  When asked about what he could reveal about the series, DeKnight was extremely tight-lipped and had this to say:

"Absolutely nothing except that we have started shooting in New York.  It’s going phenomenally well.  I was just at Disney in a top secret Marvel location today seeing something extremely cool that I can’t talk about … You know Marvel … They’ll murder me in my sleep if I say anything."

When asked which Marvel villain he would be most scared of for revealing a secret, DeKnight said:

"So far, working with Vincent D’Onofrio, I’d say Kingpin would be … would be pretty scary."

Pressing for a release date for the highly anticipated series, the reporter was able to get a timeframe of “sometime next year.”  The most revealing answer came from a question about the tone, look, and aesthetic of the series of which DeKnight said:

"We’re going for a very kind of gritty, 1970s New York feel for the show.  We love the idea of beauty in the decay of the city and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time.  And that’s why Matt Murdock loves it so much and wants to protect it."

It has long been speculated that Daredevil and the rest of Netflix’s Marvel titles (Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Defenders) would be set in the 1970s.  But the official synopsis has confirmed that the series will be set in modern day New York.  Therefore, we might expect something akin to Captain America: The Winter Soldier where social elements prevalent to that decade would help to deliver a strong theme.
