SDCC 2014: Avengers & X-Men: AXIS Panel Recap

The Avengers & X-Men: AXIS panel at Comic-Con on Thursday afternoon was short on big reveals (other than the existence of the seemingly unrelated but still cool Avengers: Rage of Ultron OGN) but did feature enough details from writer Rick Remender to give fans more reasons to look forward to Marvel’s next big event, which begins this fall.

More from Conventions And Shows

The live blog on Marvel.com provided us with enough tidbits to dig into in a little more detail:

Magneto has a big role

It makes sense that this would be the case, as Red Skull is the main villain, and those two men have personal issues that date back for years. As Remender said, “They have so many reasons to hate each other,” and the story was described as one that grew from the conflict between the Red Skull, Magneto and the Scarlet Witch.

The X-Men won’t be taking a backseat to the Avengers

Remender expressed his desire to make sure there is a solid balance between both teams. The panel teased Cyclops and Havok working together again, as well as the return of an X-villain readers haven’t seen in a while.

As for the transformation of the Red Skull into a new version of Onslaught, editor Jordan White noted that “Onslaught is one of the very few villains important to both the Avengers and the X-Men.”

AXIS will have plenty of tie-ins

Unless you just arrived via TARDIS from a time before event comics, this should come as no surprise. Captain America and Uncanny Avengers will lead directly into the first act of AXIS, while Deadpool, Loki: Agent of Asgard and All-New X-Men were singled out as series that would tie in as the story progressed.

There will also be a companion series called AXIS: Revolutions to “complement the dense story” of the main book. Not much was said about the contents of the previously announced Hobgoblin and Carnage mini-series that will also bear the AXIS brand, with senior editor Nick Lowe saying, “You have to trust us.”

Like we said, nothing Earth-shattering, but not completely without intrigue. Avengers & X-Men: AXIS kicks off in October with the first three issues making up Act I: The Red Supremacy.
