NYCC 2014: Guardians Of The Galaxy Animated Series Flies To Disney XD

Another day, another fairly big Marvel announcement that wasn’t exactly made at New York Comic Con, though it was confirmed there.

More from Conventions And Shows

The New York Times first broke the news that Guardians of the Galaxy is coming next year as an animated series that will air on Disney XD. The team will retain the same lineup as in the movie, with the hopes that the series will jumpstart along with Star Wars Rebels) the cable channel’s disappointing ratings.

Entertainment Weekly got to post the first image of the show’s key art, which you can see below. Note that the character designs are a little different from the ones we saw from Comic-Con International this summer, moving even more toward the movie looks for the characters.

Also interesting is that Stephen Wacker told the Times that the series would “pick up where the movie left off” and feature Thanos in a prominent role. That sounds like it could mean the animated show is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fill in more of what the team is up to until its next movie comes out, though that’s just speculation at this point.

I’m also going to predict that the actors are going to be too busy to be the voice cast for the show, but there are enough talented voice actors that Marvel should be able to find a crew that sounds a lot like the movie ensemble.  In any case, this is a classic case of striking while the iron is hot, and if nothing else, it’ll keep the Guardians from being out of sight, out of mind until James Gunn brings them back to theaters in 2017.
