Gambit Movie Starring Channing Tatum Reportedly A Go

This has been a big couple of weeks for superhero movies, what with DC and Marvel essentially unloading their entire clips at once, announcing a ton of comic book-focuse fare for the next five years. Fox apparently doesn’t want to be left out, not with the X-Men franchise ripe for spinoff possibilities for solo films.

Deadline reported today that one of those is a go. Specifically, a Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum and written by Josh Zetumer is in the works, based on a treatment by noted X-scribe Chris Claremont. That means it’ll be high on authenticity but also possibly full of exposition.

You may recall that we’ve already seen Gambit in the X-Men movie most of us try to forget, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch. But with X-Men: Days of Future Past making earlier films functionally irrelevant (thanks time travel!), it’s not surprising that Fox would simply start anew with a different actor.

Tatum is not of Cajun descent, as far as this writer knows, but he’s got the lady killer thing going for him. Just give him some longer hair, make his eyes glow and have him work on his accent, and it’s not hard to picture him as Remy LeBeau. Gambit was extremely popular in the 90s, so if Fox can recapture even half of that magic, this might not be a bad move.
