Rumor: Captain America: Civil War Shooting Funeral Scene

Here’s a fun bit of speculation about the next Marvel Cinematic Universe installment to start your week. According to Heroic Headlines, Captain America: Civil War is gearing up to shoot a funeral scene on Tuesday of this week. The site cites sources discussing how extras on the film are being asked to report in “formal, solid black attire,” along with an overcast, possibly stormy forecast for the Atlanta area for that day.

Assuming this is actually the case, the logical question becomes who’s getting buried in this scene. There’s always been a line of thought that Marvel could kill off Steve Rogers in his solo film, giving actor Chris Evans an out. An even more likely scenario, at least from this blogger’s perspective, is that something will happen to make it appear that Steve is dead, mirroring what happened to him in the comics, where he was displaced in time. That would allow Evans some time off before a triumphant return, most likely during Avengers: Infinity War Pt. II.

It also doesn’t have to be Cap’s funeral. Comicbook.com notes that the size-changing hero Goliath was killed in battle in the Civil War comic book series and wonders if Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man could take his place. We’ve certainly seen that Marvel isn’t afraid to introduce characters only to have them make the ultimate sacrifice in short order (anyone who’s seen Avengers: Age of Ultron should be nodding by now), so this isn’t as far-fetched as it may seem even with Ant-Man hitting theaters less than a year before Captain America: Civil War.

And it could certainly be a member of Cap’s supporting cast as well. Peggy Carter is certainly getting up there in years, so she could pass away from natural causes. Maybe Crossbones gets some revenge on Falcon or Sharon Carter, though I’d be upset if either of them get written out of the MCU already.

It’ll be fun to kick around for the weeks and months ahead, for sure. Captain America: Civil War is slated for release on May 6, 2016.
