Blue Beetle

When casting began for Season 3, one of the character descriptions that everyone zeroed in on was a tech-based businessman who also moonlighted as a hero and might make a romantic play for Felicity. Many fans suspected it would be Blue Beetle, but it appears it’s going to be The Atom instead.

Yet if we’re looking to the end of the upcoming season or beyond, there’s no reason Blue Beetle couldn’t also join in the Arrow fun. Ted Kord has already been mentioned in some dialogue, so the seed has been planted. It would be simple to have Kord involved in the corporate intrigue side of things since ownership of Queen Consolidated appears to be an ongoing concern. Like Hawkman, the Beetle can be slanted toward technology (with most of his gadgets) or mysticism (thanks to the scarab), providing for plenty of options as far as storylines go.

And in a similar fashion to Ralph Dibney, the most popular portrayal of Blue Beetle is a lighthearted one. Starling City has plenty of grim and gritty, and no one is suggesting the series get away from that, but some humor to serve as a contrast is never a bad thing. Kord could provide that even if in the scenes that don’t have him in costume. He’s also traditionally a hero who has been plagued by bouts of self-doubt, giving him some easy bonding links with Oliver, who has mastered second-guessing himself.
