5. Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Saying something is ahead of its time is old hat at this point, but there are times where it’s still true. Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was ahead of its time — open world before that was all the rage in gaming, gave the Hulk movement abilities we take for granted now, and a voice cast (Ron Perlman, Neal McDonough) you might not have expected.

Plus I’m always a big fan of truth in titles, and there couldn’t be a more fitting one than the subtitle for this game. You want to just absolutely wreck stuff? You can do that in this game, just like the Hulk should be able to do.

I think it all goes back to what I said at the top of this piece. The best super hero games make you feel like the hero in question, and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction actually puts you at the controls of the strongest one there is. Add in some excellent boss battles and a story with some surprisingly poignant moments and you’ve got the blueprint for a winner.
