Dan Slott kills off Twinkie-verse Spider-Man in Spider-Verse #1

Dan Slott has already shown that he takes great enjoyment in having Morlun and his Inheritors kill off as many different Spider-Men as possible. We’ve already seen Morlun and company kill off Iron Spider, House of M Spider, Armoured Spider-Man and even beloved children’s cartoon Spider-Men like Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends and Spider-Man Unlimited. You can see a status chart here to make sure your favourite Spider-Man is still alive.

However his latest Spider-Man death is perhaps the most shocking of all as he’s actually gone and killed off the Twinkie-Verse Spider-Man from the 80’s who was used solely for the purpose of advertising Hostess cake products.

The adverts were mainly tongue in cheek one page spreads that saw Spider-Man defeat a whole host of Z-list villains (and Galactus) with the assistance of a Hostess fruit pie or a Hostess Twinkie etc. Here he is taking on a villain called The Fly and winning with the help of a Twinkie.

The Spider-Man Hostess adverts are fairly iconic and fondly remembered by countless comic book readers at that time but that didn’t stop Dan Slott and artist Ty Templeton from bringing the classic dated one page spread back to kill of the Twinkie-weilding Spidey in Spider-Verse #1.

Basically it’s a fairly elaborate in-joke that long-time Spider-Man comic book readers will appreciate. It’s even allowed Slott to throw in that final satirical ‘You Get A Bit Delight In Every Bite Of Spider-Totems’ line which is golden! Just like a Twinkie.
