33. The Avengers – Iron Man finds a good use for a nuclear missile
Despite Nick Fury’s best efforts — and you really do have to admire a guy who is willing to blow up one of his own planes with a bazooka and even think about attempting to take out another with his pistol — the order came down to nuke Manhattan. That’s what happens when aliens start showing up and you panic a bit.
Except for the ridiculous amount of civilian casualties, I guess you could kind of see what the governments of the world were thinking considering the alternative would be the entire planet being ruled by Loki and the Chitauri. Fortunately, Iron Man had a better idea for what to do with that missile.
Perhaps borrowing a slight page from Independence Day, Iron Man tracks down the missile right before it heads into NYC (good thing J.A.R.V.I.S. put all the power into his thrusters), grabs it and carries it back through the Chitauri portal. With his last burst of power he sends it toward the alien command ship, where it detonates to basically end the Battle of New York.
He manages to fall back through the portal right before it shuts, and Hulk helpfully catches him prior to an unseemly end. Good job, everyone. Take tomorrow off.
