4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
We first saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. This year we finally got to experience his own film, fully seeing how the new Spidey would function in the MCU. Unlike previous Spider-Man films, this Peter Parker is a sophomore in high school and already in possession of his powers. Marvel Studios also made the right choice in omitting Uncle Ben’s death scene from the film, opting better to give us a Spider-Man who’s way beyond that. The resulting effect is a movie that feels unique and different from everything that’s been done before.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of Marvel’s funniest movies and it achieves this by perfectly mixing together a Breakfast Club-type story with a young superhero narrative. The stellar cast is also a plus, down to the hilarious best friend dynamic that exists between Holland’s Peter Parker and Ned Leeds (played by Jacob Batalon). The film also has one of Marvel’s best villains in Michael Keaton’s Vulture.
The film is full of great characters and moments, but like Wonder Woman, it also suffers from a mediocre third act. The final battle between Spider-Man and Vulture fails to fully astonish. This is mostly due to the opaque and dark cinematography used in the scene, making it difficult to keep track of what’s going on precisely.
