Birds of Prey: Breaking down the latest casting rumors

Renee Montoya 

Like Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya was created for Batman the Animated Series and took on a life of her own. In the pages of DC Comics, she was outed by Two-Face who was in love with her but her inability to reciprocate those feelings angered him. She’s tough as nails cop who crosses the line and quits the police department disgusted with herself. Later, she becomes an operative working with The Question, eventually taking over as the hero after his death.

In Birds of Prey, Renee Montoya is a lesbian cop, who’s tasked with taking down Black Mask.

One talented actress whose name surfaced on the reports was Justina Machado. Fans of the series Queen of the South know Machado for her role as Brenda. Fans of the show will recognize some similarities between Machado’s character, Brenda and Renee. Brenda is fearless has the mouth of a sailor and says what she’s thinking. She’s overprotective of her son and a natural leader. Machado also had a couple of notable roles on the big screen in The Call as Rachel and The Purge Anarchy. However, we think Roberta Colindre fits the role a little better. 

Roberta Colindre is known throughout the LGBTQ community who’s talents shone in the Tony Award-winning Musical Fun Home. Colindre, also shined in the critically acclaimed Amazon series, I Love Dick. And she’ll also play the role of Nico in season two of the Stars series, Vida. She’s an up and coming actress who can bring a fresh face to a movie that will likely cast well-known or established actors.

Among other names that’ll likely surface, is Jeanine Serralles who’s set to star in The Woman in the Window remake as Detective Norelli. Serralles read for the part of Renee Montoya, her test footage was leaked back August.

There weren’t any reports about Cassandra Cain. Although early rumblings suggested Warner Bros. eyeing Peyton Elizabeth Lee for the role. Lee stars in the Disney hit series, Andi Mack. Nevertheless, the wait is almost over for Birds of Prey as Cathy Yan’s film begins production in January. Of course, fans are anxiously waiting on which actresses make the cut.
