Birds of Prey: What Batman’s absence means for Gotham
DC Comics
Black Mask
In the comics, Black Mask runs a cult of people who disfigured their own faces and the faces of their victims. Moreover, his territory is by Gotham’s Clocktower, a place that once belonged to Oracle. And what he now calls the Fashion District.
In Birds of Prey, everything can stay the same. We know Black Mask is an established crime lord who has his sights set on Cassandra Cain. It makes sense especially if she possesses the skills of her comic book counterpart. Even with her skills, taking on his cult, the True Facers is too much. We don’t know who’ll play Black Mask, yet but whoever he is he’ll have to come face to face with Huntress.
Huntress
Mary Elizabeth Winstead will play arguably the most important character in Birds of Prey, Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress. In the comics she dawns the Batgirl suit and takes out Black Mask’s operation. Her role, however, is very important. No Man’s Land follows the exhausting journey of Helena whose held down sectors of Gotham alone. Feeling the city needed Batman, Helena dressed up like him and the Batgirl moniker became her unofficial title. Birds of Prey will likely follow the events of Huntress taking on Joker’s entire army which we imagine where she met Harley Quinn.
