Morbius is set to start filming next year and now there’s news on who the villain could be.
Morbius is an interesting movie to focus on right now. While Sony still has Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse coming later this year from its animation department, talk has shifted to the next live-action movie already. The success that Venom saw is the main reason for that.
That Hashtag Show is reporting that the main villain for Morbius will be Loxias Crown. Don’t worry if you aren’t too familiar with that name because according to the report, there isn’t a character by that exact name in the comics. However, there is a character named Hunger, who goes by the alias of Crown at times.
Crown is a mutant who first appeared in Spider-Man #76 in 1997. He’s made several appearances since then, but he has never really been a main villain. That could change with this movie if he is the one that Sony plans to base the character on.
I have to admit, though, that this doesn’t make me very confident in what Sony is doing with this movie so far. In comparison to Venom, I don’t know how many people are too familiar with Morbius and I don’t think these announcements are really making anyone dive into the character unless they’re already huge fans of the Spider-Man comics.
Morbius does have a description up on IMDb right now, but it is pretty vague.
Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.
Like Venom, this will be an origin story. While I didn’t think a character like Venom necessarily needed an origin story, it makes more sense for a lesser-known character like Morbius. I’ll try to reserve most of my judgement on this movie until we actually see some footage, but I also won’t make any promises on that.
