Avengers: Infinity War co-writer hints at how Thanos could be defeated

The remaining Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy have a huge challenge coming up in Avengers 4, but co-writer Christopher Markus shared some clues on how they might defeat Thanos.

Although the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy did all they could to stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War, the Mad Titan ended up wiping out half of life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. Heartbreaking, to say the least.

With a big part of the current superhero roster of the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned to ashes, fans have been trying to figure out how they will bring back those who vanished and ultimately defeat Thanos, with most of the theories pointing to time travel and the importance of the Quantum Realm. Now, while most of these seem possible, there’s one detail that most fans may have not noticed or simply forgot.

Infinity War and Avengers 4 co-writer Christopher Markus shared in the book Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie (via Comicbook) a small but very important detail regarding Thanos and the Infinity Stones. So we have the soul, reality, mind, space, time, and power stones, all with their individual powers and a major threat when used together. The trick is on the time stone, as it would allow Thanos to reset as many times as he pleases.

As Markus points out, the stones have been misused by people who didn’t fully understand their true power (just take a look back at some pre-Infinity War movies), but now that Thanos, “the real master of them”, has them, we can see the true potential of the stones. Markus continues:

“The problem is, as you can imagine, as you gain control over these things, your story just goes haywire because why are there any stakes for the man who can control time, space, reality, your mind, your soul and power? He can reset as many times as it’ll take. So you have to build in a lot of bumps in the road or maybe keep one stone away from him for long enough in order for the thing to have any dramatic structure at all”.

Keep one of the stones away from him, uh? Time-resetting, you say? Yeah, it’s going to be a huge challenge, but maybe some fan theories can shed some light on this. One of the main theories regarding time travel says that Scott Lang, now trapped in the Quantum Realm, will have to use a time vortex to escape, thus introducing a new time-traveling method that would allow our heroes to go back in time and collect the stones before Thanos. This would rewrite everything we have come to know, which is a bit of a risky move but at this point, anything could happen.

Along with that theory is one that suggests that, after seeing all possible futures, Doctor Strange cast a “hidden time loop spell” on the time stone and tricked Thanos into taking it. This spell would reset time to before the snap, so the Avengers could travel through time out of the loop and, you guessed it, collect the stones. Others say Strange sent the time stone to the future.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the answer is right before our eyes and becomes clear once Avengers 4 is out – like, let’s say, Strange actually casting a time loop spell on the stone in the background which we never noticed because there were other things happening in the foreground. Or, maybe Thanos will suddenly notice he is missing a stone with Scott Lang appearing on the other side of the universe with said stone.

There’s also the possibility of Captain Marvel giving a few hints on what their next move will be. Until then, we can only keep on theorizing with what we have. Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
