Captain Marvel official trailer arrives, introduces Kree vs. Skrulls

At halftime of the Monday Night Football game, a new trailer for Captain Marvel was released.

Carol Danvers is ready to defend Earth from other-worldly threats in next year’s Captain Marvel. The movie will pit the space adventurer against the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens looking to invade the world. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the first teaser for Captain Marvel, giving us our first look at Brie Larson in action as the titular hero.

Now, with Captain Marvel right around the corner, the House of Ideas has released the film’s first full-length trailer:

There’s a lot to unpack from this. Perhaps the most important thing is Carol Danvers herself. We’ve seen many different types of superhero personalities over the years, but Danvers is bringing a new dynamic to the genre.

Speaking to Polygon, Captain Marvel comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick explained what made Carol tick:

“Carol falls down all the time, but she always gets back up — we say that about Captain America as well, but Captain America gets back up because it’s the right thing to do. Carol gets back up because ‘Fuck you.'”

From what’s shown in the trailer, Larson perfectly brings that attitude to life.

Another big takeaway from the trailer is the film’s cosmic elements. Marvel Studios has been gradually introducing audiences to its cosmic corner with films like Thor: Ragnarok, Infinity War and of course, Guardians of the Galaxy. Captain Marvel will take things to a new level by doing a deep dive into the Kree and Skrull cultures.

Those cultures are pivotal aspects of the ever-expanding Marvel mythology, and they could considerably expand the MCU’s cosmic corner.

While we wait for Carol Danvers to fly into theaters, check out the movie’s official synopsis:

“Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain Marvel’ is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.”

Captain Marvel opens on March 8, 2019.
