14. Danai Gurira as Okoye

Superhero Movies: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame

Okoye was another character in Black Panther who wasn’t well known, including among those who are fans of Marvel Comics as well. This meant Ryan Coogler had a character who he could mold into something better than we’ve seen.

DanaiGurira made her stamp as Michonne in AMC’s show The Walking Dead. When she was cast as the Wakandan warrior Okoye, people were ecstatic. She was a bad-@$$ in The Walking Dead, so there was no reason to doubt her ahead of her superhero movie debut. She exceeded what anybody thought she would do, so much that she put on a better performance than Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger.

"“For Wakanda, without question.”- Okoye"

It didn’t matter who was on-screen. Danai Gurira stole the show. She had an aura that couldn’t be hidden. There were scenes where she was flat-out hilarious such as scenes with her being annoyed by the wig she was wearing or calling guns primitive while she was using a spear. She also had intensity. Delivering that line where she pointed her spear and told her love that she’d drop him without question let you know she meant it.

When she was around the big gun Avengers, she still held her own. The look she gave Banner as he tripped over himself perfectly portrayed disgust. And she still had her one liner when she asked why Wanda wasn’t with them the entire time. Danai Gurira has been amazing thus far and she’s only going to get better.
