1. Blackest Night

The dead have returned to life and the revolving door between life and death in the DC universe is slowly closing.

Who would’ve thought that a zombie story would be the best DC event, but here we are, with a zombie story as the best DC event. But, it’s not the best event simply because it’s a zombie story, it’s the best because of how it handles the characters involved. See, Blackest Night handles zombies in ways that aren’t normally done.

In this case, the zombies retain all the personality and memories associated with who they were and it’s terrifying. Every little thing that these characters have done, every fear, every mistake is used against them and they need to power through it. It’s incredibly powerful seeing characters literally confronting their demons and overcoming them, showing why they are the heroes they are.

Plus, at its heart, this is a horror story, which differentiates it from pretty much every other event. Despite using a worn premise, it still manages to feel fresh, and scary, in a way that most Marvel and DC comics are unable to do. This is also one of the few events where it’s worth it to read most, if not all, of the tie-in issues.
