And then there’s her husband; who was really Dr. Manhattan, A man who is essentially a god. Yet at no point did Angela take any nonsense from him. She always spoke to him honestly, despite knowing he could wipe her out of existence as quickly as he could think it. That didn’t matter. She stood up to him and called him out whenever he did something foolish. And when the Rorschach goons came by to capture him, she ran out to help. Let that sink in for a moment — she went out to help a god. A woman so protective of her husband that she was there to protect someone who knew everything that was going to happen. Moments like these are what made Angela exceptional.
All in all, Regina King should be praised for what she did in Watchmen. She’s joining an elite group of memorable black women who’ve made an impact in comic book genre, a group that includes names like Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, and Simone Missick. It’s disappointing that King hasn’t gotten many award nominations, but the good news is Watchmen fans will always recognize her greatness, meaning she’ll always have a place in our hearts.
