Frenchie’s origin story highlights another amazing episode of The Boys season 2. Here’s why “The Bloody Doors Off” was another win for the show.

Previously, on The Boys season 2, we were given the weirdest ending of this very short series. Homelander and Stormfront got it on! They threw each other around the room, then kissed, hit each other in the face and did some other sexual things. Homelander laser-beamed Stormfront’s chest and they slept together.

Considering all of the out-there stuff we’ve seen on this show, it’s befuddling that this is among the strangest moments thus far. It makes you wonder what’s going to happen next?

Well, the first scene with the two of them in “The Bloody Doors Off” quickly answered that question.

Homelander and Stormfront get bloody

The show starts with a flashback with Frenchie and then him taking Starlight’s chip out of her neck. It was bloody and Hughie ends up with blood on his face (seems to happen to him often). While that’s crazy, it’s nothing compared to what happened next. A guy robs a bank and gets caught by Homelander and Stormfront. Scary enough if you’re apprehended by them. When you know what they’re about, it’s downright terrifying.

Homelander sarcastically suggests they should take him to the police and Stormfront sarcastically agrees. Then, she proceeds to rub his crotch while his hand is against the criminal’s head. As he gets, um, excited, Homelander crushes the robber’s head and, again, the pair get it on in the alley. Mind you, there’s still blood on their hands – a hand that she puts in Homelander’s mouth. Seriously, what is wrong with them?!

As the episode continues, so does their story. It’s not all love and roses (this reference will make sense after you watch the episode).

Frenchie comes to the forefront

This writer is a huge fan of backstories. Especially when they’re done properly. Frenchie’s story isn’t one that we may not have known we wanted, but it’s one we needed. Not only did we get to see where he was before he joined The Boys, but we were given a glimpse into why he was recruited. Grace Mallory grabbed him because he’s smarter than he lets on.

He found ways to take out criminals with basic things. For example, Frenchie weaponized xanax on a superhero who’s powered by rage.

We never really knew what he brought to the team until now. Sure, he’s good in a fight, but people like that are a dime a dozen. Here, we finally got to see how good he is.

There’s something else great about this episode too. We get to see Frenchie as more than just a criminal; he’s emotional. Seeing him lose control in the room with the medication wasn’t like him. He’s usually calm and cool – even when he’s drunk and high. But this was different. His character evolution is getting better and better. Hopefully we’ll see more of this throughout the series. Especially with M.M. We’ve only seen part of what’s going on with him.

Right now, though, the spotlight belongs to Frenchie.

The Boys season 2, episode 6 review

The prison part of this episode of The Boys season 2 may have been the best part of the show. The funny part is that it came in the beginning of the episode.

Sometimes, the action is what you’re looking for but, on a whole, this season has done well without using it a ton. This time, they gave us what we’ve been missing early in the show. It got adrenaline pumping right at the beginning.

During their time in the hospital, Shawn Ashmore played the cowardly, psychotic, yet powerful supe as Lamplighter was even better than expected. Some were concerned since he’s not used to playing these roles but this was a pleasant surprise.

The prison narrative was phenomenal, indeed, but there was another important aspect of the episode. The story involving Starlight, Butcher, and Hughie. Without giving too much away, Starlight is slowly losing herself. She’s becoming something she’s always detested. The question we need to ask if this is good or bad?

On one hand, she needs to get harder; sometimes people stink and you have to accept that. It’s a difficult lesson to learn, but the band-aid needs to be ripped off. On the other, the way she felt about the driver isn’t a good sign.

MAJOR SPOILER!

The ending was something fans of The Boys comic book saw coming. Stormfront finally admits that she’s a Nazi. She explains where she was and why she’s been so secretive. In the end, Homelander had a decision to make: Stay with a Nazi or rip her head off.

In a not so shocking moment, Homelander kisses her as the theme to The Golden Girls plays in the background.

Down with The Boys

  • Frenchie’s convo about the Golden Girls raising him is hilarious. It was sweet as well. That said, their theme song is now stuck in all our of heads.
  • At some point they have to explain the deal with all the Frescas. It’s the most random soda to use. There’s no way it’s not being used for mind control.

Kimiko does so well without saying anything. It’s an art that not many actors have mastered. Karen Fukuhara should be commended for it.

Lamplighter looked like the biggest idiot in his costume. Vought must have made that as a joke. How does he not know how he looks?

Frenchie’s is easily the MVP of this episode. Everything about him was flawless here.

It’s funny that Shawn Ashmore went from fighting Pyro in X-Men to playing him.

The look on Stormfront’s face when Homelander grabbed her throat said a lot. She’s realizing that she may have played this game wrong.

Butcher and Starlight in the hospital was needed. This may not have been like the comic book, but it was still important.

48 minutes in. That’s all that needs to be said. Actually, it’s all that can be said on this website.
