Sony teases jaw-dropping new villain for Spider-Man 3

Is Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds set to become the Hobgoblin in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.

While there has been speculation for a number of years now that Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds may eventually become the Hobgoblin, it was beginning to look like the Marvel Cinematic Universe had other plans for the character. However, an Instagram account run by Sony that was used as part of a marketing campaign (H/T: ScreenRant) suggests otherwise.

Sony published an image of Ned and Betty Brant (Angourie Rice) with scribbled on pros and cons beside each character. The one of Betty has pink horns drawn onto her head but the graphic of Ned is quite interesting, as it has an orange triangle beside his head in the style of a hood similar to the one worn by Hobgoblin.

This viral marketing image could just be a fun little tease to acknowledge the character’s comic book history and perhaps we’re all reading a little too much into it. However, there are things of note to take into account. One of the most interesting aspects of that image is the cons listed for Ned: “Everything else.”

Could that be a direct tease for what is to come? Is Ned destined for villainy? Here is something else of note: Batalon did lose weight in recent months, with many wondering if this was a requirement for the next stage of the character’s journey.

Will Ned become the Hobgoblin in Spider-Man 3?

While it’s unlikely that Ned will appear as the Hobgoblin in Spider-Man 3, there is always the possibility that the film’s events lay the groundwork for that in the future. Perhaps something goes down in the film that could drive a wedge between him and Peter Parker.

Also, consider that Willem Dafoe has reportedly been spotted on the set of the film, fuelling rumors that he is reprising his role as Norman Osborn aka Green Goblin from Spider-Man. If he does, perhaps Dafoe could fulfil Roderick Kingsley’s role (the original Hobgoblin) in the comics by breaking Ned to the point where he cracks by the film’s climax.

The Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Benedict Cumberbatch but that cast could grow significantly with all the appearances seemingly lined-up. Jon Watts is directing from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing for Marvel Studios in association with Pascal Pictures. Sony Pictures Releasing is set to distribute. Spider-Man 3 will swing into theaters next year on Dec. 17, 2021.
