Invincible: 8 changes that the TV show made from the comics
By Mark Lynch
Amber and Shrinking Rae
One of the things people fans of the comic saw when watching the series was the changes to some of the characters. This might seem like a minor thing, but it was a huge move – and one that should be applauded.
The decision to adapt Amber as a Black woman and Shrink Rae as a woman was admirable because it highlighted the creative team’s commitment to inclusiveness, ensuring that many people got to see themselves represented on-screen. The comic book series was very diverse but adding more diversity to the show is a good thing.
Making any kind of huge changes to a character can run the risk of taking away from the character’s personality but that was never an issue here – and it shouldn’t be when it’s something as important as this kind of change. It’s one that this writer is all for.
RAMPAGE!
The seventh episode of Invincible showed what Omni-Man was made of. He was on a rampage that couldn’t be stopped no matter what was thrown at him. However, it didn’t play out like that in the comics. There, it was just Immortal that challenged Nolan before he fought Mark – a fight that Omni-Man easily dominated.
This change gave us a long series of fights and epic moments for Omni-Man. We already knew he was tough, strong, and nearly indestructible – he defeated the world’s greatest superhero team by himself. Despite that, showing him run the gauntlet of weapons, creatures, and reanimated super-strong soldiers went a long way in highlighting just how unstoppable he really was.
This writer can’t wait until the other Viltrumites show up.
