100 greatest comic book characters of all-time
By Mark Lynch
Greatest comic book characters – 20. Loki
First comic book appearance: Journey into Mystery No. 85
Loki is amazing regardless of what he’s doing. As a villain, he’s caused damage that’s affected worlds at a time. When he’s playing both sides of the field, Loki has left readers wondering what his next move will be. As a hero, he’s surprisingly kind and wise. Not many characters can pull this off.
Currently, Loki is the ruler of Jotunheim. A journey that wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t “slightly” help Malekith during The War of the Realms. At the end of the day, Loki helped, but not before he hurt. That’s Loki in a nutshell. He may be doing his best to not be the God of Lies, but wait a little while. He’ll be back to his old ways eventually.
Greatest comic book characters – 19. Mr. Sinister
First comic book appearance: (full appearance) Uncanny X-Men No. 221
A lot of villains lose and have nothing to show for it. Even the great and popular Doctor Doom has taken losses and left empty-handed. Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister) doesn’t have that problem. He could have a loss of epic proportions and still come out with something. It’s what made him one of the X-Men’s most dangerous villains. Sinister never truly loses.
Over the last five years, Sinister has been given a makeover. He’s more eccentric than he was originally. While a major change usually hurts characters, it helped him. Sinister has been funnier. His dramatic outbursts have not been believable when going to the Quiet Council (see Hellions for more), but the readers are loving it. Especially his love for the way he looks and obsession with his cape. A change that will work well in the MCU.
