Amazon is giving The Boys an R-rated spinoff! Here’s what we know and what we can expect.
Before season 2 of Amazon’s The Boys debuted, season 3 was green lit. It was a smart move. The Boys continued to be a popular TV show, generating discussion even when it’s not airing new episodes. It’s easy to see how influential the show is. Without it, it’s doubtful that fellow Amazon superhero series Invincible would be allowed to feature the adult and mature content that it has showcased thus far.
The Boys’ success continues to grow. Around a year ago, it was announced that there would be a college spin-off. Deadline reported that it would be an “irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.”
However, new developments have surfaced. TVLine confirms that the show has been ordered to series, also revealing some of the cast members who will be playing the young and impressionable superheroes. Jaz Sinclair (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Aimee Carrero (a personal favorite from Young & Hungry) Lizze Broadway (Here and Now), Reina Hardesty (The Flash) Shane Paul McGhie (Greenleaf), and Maddie Phillips (Teenage Bounty Hunters) will all be joining The Boys spin-off.
Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have stepped in as showrunners as well, with The Hollywood Reporter noting that Craig Rosenberg left due to creative differences. Fazekas and Butters have also worked on shows like Agent Carter, The X-Files and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It will be interesting to see what they bring to Amazon’s The Boys franchise.

What can we expect from The Boys spinoff?
We already know that The Boys’ untitled spin-off is going to be a combination of a college show and The Hunger Games. We can also pretty much confirm that we will see a lot of moments that will undoubtedly make us drop our jaws. There are other things to note before the show drops.
First, if it’s anything like it’s predecessor, everyone on it will probably be expendable. If you like a character, don’t get too attached. They’re probably going to die. Even if they win the contest, there’s no guarantee that they won’t be killed right as the show ends. It’s hard to see any of the characters becoming a legit superhero. Vought International doesn’t care about anything except money. If the winner doesn’t fall in line, they’ll probably be killed.
Second, you’re undoubtedly going to see a lot of messed up things. The Boys isn’t known for holding back and we already know that this show will highlight a number of boundary-pushing events that the characters will find them in. It might see this as a real opportunity to reflect the darker side of some people’s college experiences, showcasing the harsh reality of what happens when you have people who use their power (and in this case abilities) to get whatever they want. If that is the case, hopefully there will be repercussions to the perpetrators’ actions.
Lastly, there is a possibility that we could see a super-team involved from the comic books. That team is the G-Men. In the source material, the G-Men are a team of frat boys who do some weird things. They were stolen from their families at a young age and had heinous things done to them. The G-Men are also the highest selling property for Vought in the comics. Hopefully, they won’t go the route of what the G-men went through to become superheroes. Some things shouldn’t be mentioned.

In closing…
Creating a spin-off for The Boys is a genius idea . It allows fans to see things that they normally wouldn’t without adding too much to the original show. Too many stories in one season can ruin a series and there is already a lot going on in The Boys. There will always be plots revolving around Homelander, Billy Butcher, Hughie, and Starlight. Adding new characters and the element of the college experience is too much for one season of The Boys. Can you picture all of the unconventional tasks and games that we’ll see? Think of Double Dare, but add a healthy dose of reality TV.
If this spin-off is a success, there is a strong chance we could see more spin-offs. The Boys’ universe is full of possibilities and there are a plethora of topics to use. For example, a series around the inner workings on Vought International could work, especially if you have Ashley Barrett (played by Colby Minifie) as one of the stars and Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) making appearances as well.
This is only one of the many ideas that could be explored. Don’t be surprised if The Boys universe continues to expand if this spin-off series does well. They haven’t let us down yet. There’s no reason to think they’ll start now.
What do you think? Is a college spin-off in the world of Amazon’s The Boys a good idea? Are you looking forward to seeing it? Let us know in the comments below.
