Check out some of the best, worst, and funniest moments from Venom in the pages of Marvel Comics.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage was a big time hit at the box office. The sequel to the 2018 Sony project was No. 1 domestically at the box office with $90.1 million, making it the highest grossing domestic movie in the pandemic era. This solidifies that there’s a future for Venom projects at Sony. Considering what happened in the mid-credit scene, there could be a future for Eddie Brock and the symbiote somewhere else as well!
The Symbiote has been popular in Marvel Comics since it appeared way back in the original Secret War. It really picked up momentum when Peter Parker gave it up and it was attached to Eddie Brock. That’s when the symbiote became Venom and became one of the most recognizable characters in all of comics.
Throughout it’s time in Marvel Comics, the Klyntar has clung to multiple people on Earth. Peter Parker and Eddie Brock are the most famous but Mac Gargan (the Scorpion), Wolverine, Flash Thompson, and more have bonded with it as well. Throughout that time, there have been some incredible moments. There’ve also been some embarrassing ones as well. Here are some that truly stick out.
Good Venom
King in Black
Within the year, Venom was killed by an ancient being called Knull (King in Black No. 1). Knull is the creator of the Klyntar and one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Knull came to Earth and engulfed all of Earth in a symbiote shell. It wasn’t until Eddie came back with the power of the Enigma Force that Knull was beaten. After defeating him, Eddie Brock became the new King of the Symbiotes.
Guardian of the Galaxy
Flash Thompson became Venom by accident. Nonetheless, it was a happy accident. Flash was one of the more creative users of the Symbiote. He found ways to fight with it that not even Eddie Brock thought of. This was probably because Flash was a soldier in the military. He was trained to fight while Eddie learned on the fly. Agent Venom went on to become an Avenger, Thunderbolt, and a Guardian of the Galaxy.
Secret Invasion
Mac Gargan is this writer’s favorite Venom. Not because he’s good. It’s actually the opposite. Mac was awful with the symbiote. He constantly did things that made no sense and never quite lived up to looking like a monster. That was until the Skrulls invaded Earth in Secret Invasion. Along with the Thunderbolts, Gargan helped defend Washington D.C. from the Skrull invasion. He ate a lot of Skrulls that day.
Funny Venom
“Skrulls make me gassy, Ozman”
After the Skrulls were defeated, Norman Osborn was put in charge. One of the first things he did was take his Thunderbolts and make them Avengers. Among those Thunderbolts was Mac Gargan (who went from Venom to Spider-Man). Before Norman made him an Avenger, though, he was sending Skrulls into Mac’s cell to be Venom-food. After eating them, Mac said Skrulls made him gassy. This was information that no one knew… or needed to know.
Helmet head
Venom isn’t a serious character – and that’s no matter who’s using the symbiote. Although, Mac Gargan may have been the goofiest of them all. In one particular issue of Thunderbolts, Mac was being mind-controlled by prisoners in Thunderbolt Mountain. They made him kill and eat a plethora of the security in the mountain. After beating one of them, he decided to put their helmet on. Why he did it is unclear. Regardless of the reason, it was funny seeing a giant monster in a tiny helmet.
Venomsaurus Rex
Old Man Logan had perverse versions of the characters we know. There were also some funny ones too. Among them was a Venomized tyrannosaurus. We didn’t see much of it except when it was chasing Logan and Hawkeye. Seeing a T-Rex in a symbiote suit is something that will always make this writer smile.
Embarrassing Venom
Isn’t it ironic
One of the definitions of irony is a situation that is strange or funny because things happen in a way that seems to be the opposite of what you expected. A perfect example of this came in Dark Avengers.
The Dark Avengers were fighting Morgan le Fay’s monsters to protect Doctor Doom. One of them tried to eat Venom, which infuriated him. Daken (who was posing as Wolverine) simply said, “And the irony is completely lost on him.”
Trainwreck
Eddie Brock’s biggest enemy is Carnage. He may hate Peter Parker, but Carnage is the antithesis of everything that he stands for. He’s evil in ways that most people can’t fathom. This leads to Eddie constantly trying to stop Carnage. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. This particular time it did not. Carnage escaped after tricking him into getting hit by a moving train. One of the more embarrassing things to happen to Eddie as Venom. Give it a Google search. It’s pretty funny.
Angelo Fortunato
Don Fortunato wanted his son Angelo to take over his criminal empire one day. But he needed his son to be strong. When Eddie put his Symbiote up for auction, Don Fortunato bought it for Angelo. The symbiote relationship with Angelo lasted less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Venom abandons Angelo and in the middle of the fight because he found Angelo pathetic.
