The Flash and the 15 best superhero TV shows from the last 15 years
WandaVision
Year: 2021
Seasons: 1
It still feels a little odd putting a show like WandaVision on a list of superhero shows. That in itself is proof of how revolutionary the Disney Plus series was. Yes, these are MCU characters, and yes, they are in the MCU, but the show experimented with so many different genres and styles in its nine-episode run that it makes it rather impossible to pin down with one genre.
From Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s world class performances as Wanda Maximoff and Vision, to the show’s excellent use of the light-hearted sitcom format as a metaphor for grief, it’s easy to see why WandaVision was nominated for so many awards after its run. And it set a bar so high for not just the comic book genre but television itself, ensuring that we’ll be talking about it for decades to come.
The Flash
Year: 2014 – present
Seasons: 8 (season 9 is happening)
Arguably the most successful superhero TV show in network television history, The Flash was the first of many Arrowverse spin-offs, and it was undoubtedly the most revolutionary. Not only did its first season set a bar so high that few in the genre have managed to equal, it eclipsed the success of its own parent show Arrow.
Starring Grant Gustin as the lovable dork Barry Allen, the show was praised for how unlike Arrow it was, bringing the light-hearted superhero dramas of old back to the small screen. It also made DC’s Scarlet Speedster a household name and ensured that people would be talking about him for a long time – which they were, for most of the past decade in fact.
The Flash remains one of the most popular superhero TV shows of all time (and if its renewed for one more season, it could match Smallville‘s record as the longest-running).
