Sony’s Marvel Universe of Spider-Man Characters will grow with Madame Web, and we now have our first look at Dakota Johnson in the title role via recent set photos.
The Sony Universe Of Marvel Characters film series has been an interesting ride, to say the least. From the Venom films being met with the critical division to Morbius‘ overwhelmingly negative response and its confusing post-credit scene, it’s hard to get invested in the overall story when the films feel so directionless.
However, that universe will grow much more in the years ahead, with the next installment being Kraven The Hunter, which completed filming in June and is slated for a Jan 13, 2023 release with Aaron Taylor Johnson starring as the titular character.
And we can’t forget that Venom 3 and El Muerto – a superhero film featuring Bad Bunny – are also both in development. In addition to that, however, a Madame Web solo film is slated for an Oct 6, 2023 release. It feels Sony will try to do everything in their power to ensure Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will meet up with these established characters at some point. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but Madame Web is slowly coming to fruition.
Dakota Johnson suits up as Madame Web in new set photos
Well, the Madame Web film from Sony is currently filming, and it seems our first look at Dakota Johnson as the titular character has been revealed. As reported by The Direct, set photos from Madame Web (which can be viewed here in a tweet) suggest that Johnson may be portraying the Julia Carpenter version of the character because she is rocking the signature red jacket. Carpenter goes by a couple of names in the comics, such as the second Spider-Woman, Archane, and Madame Web. She first appeared in Secret Wars #6 in 1987.
In the photos, Johnson can be seen wearing a black T-shirt (and a gray T-shirt with the same jacket), along with jeans and getting out of a taxi. Other than that, not much can be interpreted about where this scene or a shot of filming takes place in the film. However, it seems that Johnson’s red jacket will either play a key role or a main accessory the actress will wear throughout the film.
Very little plot details about the movie are known, which isn’t helped by the fact that much of the cast is playing mystery roles. Set photos of Adam Scott, who recently joined the growing cast, have also surfaced online, but they don’t explain who his mystery character is. Then factor in the little breadcrumbs of how Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney described her character as one with “struggles” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that the training process includes “fight training, movement training” and “Reformacore Pilates”.
It seems Sony is playing this one close to the chest and not revealing anything until the time is right, and for fans, the vague approach is best suited for whatever this latest non-MCU film will be.
Madame Web also stars Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Madame Web is slated for an Oct 6, 2023 release date after being recently pushed back from its summer 2023 release.
