MCU: The 20 best Marvel Cinematic Universe characters of 2022
By Mark Lynch
1. Ramonda
Marvel project: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Actress: Angela Bassett
It was difficult not putting Scarlet Witch at No. 1. Especially after praising her in the prior slide. Nevertheless, some performances are so unbelievable that they surpass everything that came before it. That’s where Angela Bassett comes in. What Bassett did in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was nothing short of perfection personified.
First, there’s the way she addressed the world at the beginning of the movie. She was a woman who the world looked at as weak. With T’Challa gone, Wakanda should be easy pickings. They quickly found out how wrong they were. She told the world exactly how she felt, what was going to happen going forward, and there was nothing they could do about it. Especially after the Dora Milaje came in with the failed mercenaries. When Ramonda left, the entire council of world representatives couldn’t do anything except sit in their seats and watch a goddess leave the room.
Maybe the most memorable moment was how she spoke while on the throne. Ramonda gave the most heartfelt speech about how much she gave up. People remember that she just lost T’Challa, but they forget her husband (T’Chakka) died recently as well (that happened in Captain America: Civil War). And, at that point in the movie, she thought she lost her daughter too. Angela Bassett spoke like a woman in pain because that’s what Ramonda was.
Give Angela Bassett every acting award possible. There won’t be a performance in 2022 that will top anything she did in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This was the best way to end this phase of Marvel because no other project could top what she did.
