HBO’s The Last of Us is a masterclass in adaptation

The Last of Us conclusion
Overall, there’s a lot of potential in The Last of Us and this was only the first episode of the season. There are likely going to be more connections to the video game. Some of them will be understandably more obvious to maintain an accurate story; others will likely be subtle. It could be a view that only the repeat gamers remember, or maybe it will be something as simple as Joel putting a pair of scissors on a bat to kill a clicker. Granted, bludgeoning a clicker isn’t very subtle. Either way, moments that pay tribute to the game are crucial to keeping the gamer fans invested in the show. It makes them feel seen.
While the gamer community may only account for a small amount of viewers, they’re still important and shouldn’t be overlooked. People who’ve never played The Last of Us may go to them to explain certain scenes and moments, so if they aren’t enjoying what they’re seeing, it may influence others. Now, if the gamers are enjoying things, positive word-of-mouth will get more people to watch because it’s an opinion that can be trusted.
If the rest of the season is even close to the standard of the premiere, HBO will have another hit on its hands with The Last of Us.
