The SnyderVerse managed to bring together the Justice League on the big screen with an incredible ensemble of stars, but which performer produced the best performance?

Zack Snyder’s SnyderVerse franchise has been both praised and criticized by audiences over the years for its unique vision and approach to the superhero genre. Some fans have appreciated the darker, more serious tone, while others have criticized the films for those same reasons.

The interconnected series of superhero films that were directed or produced by filmmaker Zack Snyder might be limited to 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017’s Justice League, but the films also managed to pull together several key characters from the broader DC Extended Universe who made their debuts in SnyderVerse franchise of films. This includes Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg.

Despite mixed critical reception, there is no denying the impact the SnyderVerse has had on the superhero film genre, showcasing a distinct and visionary take on some of the most iconic characters in pop culture. It also managed to pull together some truly amazing performers to bring the Justice League’s key players to life on the big screen.

As DC Studios looks to bring an end to the DCEU, the new DC leadership has already begun cleaning house by parting ways with the actors who previously played key heroes in the franchise including many who appeared in Justice League. With this era coming to an end, we’re taking a look back and ranking the key members of the SnyderVerse’s Justice League from worst to best.

Note: For the purpose of this ranking, we’re only looking at the core members of the Justice League and not the broader SnyderVerse franchise.

6. Ray Fisher as Cyborg

Ray Fisher’s performance as Cyborg in the DC Extended Universe was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the franchise. Despite the character’s limited screen time, Fisher managed to bring depth and nuance to the role, capturing the complexity of a young man struggling to come to terms with his newfound powers and his troubled relationship with his father.

However, despite Fisher’s impressive acting abilities, he was never able to fully realize the character of Cyborg due to poor writing. The character was given a minimal backstory, with his transformation into Cyborg largely glossed over, leaving audiences with little understanding of the character’s motivations or struggles. The film also failed to explore Cyborg’s relationship with the other members of the Justice League, leaving his role in the team feeling underdeveloped and disconnected from the main plot.

Ranking Cyborg as last on this list likely comes with little surprise to fans and may seem like a cop-out, but it’s hard to justify ranking the character above others from the Justice League whose stories were fleshed out more, thus allowing for them to shine in more ways than Fisher was given. This is why it’s so important to note that the position is not a reflection of Fisher, who did the best he could with the limited materials he was provided.

5. Ben Affleck as Batman

Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman in the DCEU was met with mixed reviews, particularly in terms of his emotional depth and range as the iconic character. Many fans and critics noted that Affleck’s performance lacked the same level of emotional intensity and nuance as previous actors who played the role, such as Christian Bale and Michael Keaton.

Affleck’s performance failed to fully capture the emotional complexity of Batman, particularly his brooding and tortured nature. Sure, Affleck certainly looked the part with his imposing physical presence and impressive bat suit, but he ultimately fell short when it came to portraying the character’s inner turmoil and moral struggles.

When one plays a character as iconic as Batman, it’s hard not to compare their performance to past actors. And one of the downfalls of Batfleck was how his performance lacked the same level of nuance and subtlety as previous portrayals of Batman. While Bale and Keaton both brought a certain degree of gravitas and depth to their performances, Affleck’s performance often felt one-dimensional and lacking in emotional range.

While Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman certainly had its moments of strength, it ultimately fell short of the high bar set by previous actors who have taken on the iconic role as well as the bar set by his Justice League costars.

4. Ezra Miller as The Flash

Factoring out the series of controversies connected to the star behind the character, there is no denying that Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen/The Flash has brought much-needed humor to the otherwise darker tone of the DC film franchise. This success can be attributed to the way the character is written and presented in the films.

Barry Allen is depicted as a socially awkward and slightly clumsy character who is still learning to control his powers. This vulnerability makes him relatable and endearing to audiences, and his humorous quips and one-liners add a lightness to the overall tone of the films — one that is very much needed to balance out the often darker tones of the SnyderVerse films.

The character’s humor doesn’t detract from the action and drama of the films but instead enhances them by providing moments of levity and emotional relief. And it’s not just The Flash’s jokes and one-liners. His physical comedy, such as his exaggerated facial expressions and movements, adds an extra layer of humor to the character and make him stand out from other superheroes.

Miller’s Flash is a success in bringing much-needed humor to the DCEU. The character’s relatable vulnerability, comedic quips, and physical humor make him a standout character in the franchise. His humor doesn’t detract from the drama and action of the films, but instead enhances them by providing much-needed moments of levity and emotional relief.

3. Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman in the DCEU has been widely recognized as one of the best superhero casting decisions of recent years, and for good reason.

Momoa’s physical presence alone made him a natural fit for the role. At 6’4″ and with a muscular build, he looked every bit the part of the Atlantean king. But it was his interpretation of the character that really made him stand out. Aquaman had always been portrayed as a clean-cut, blonde-haired hero in the comics, but Momoa brought a fresh, gritty edge to the character that was both unexpected and refreshing.

Momoa’s Aquaman was a rebellious, beer-drinking, and tattooed outsider, who had been raised by his human father and was struggling to come to terms with his identity as a half-Atlantean. It was a nuanced and complex performance that added depth to the character and gave audiences something new and exciting to root for.

Momoa’s charisma and screen presence were also essential to the role’s success. He had a natural charm and wit that made him immensely likable, even when he was rough around the edges. His performance was a refreshing and exciting take on a classic comic book character.

2. Henry Cavill as Superman

Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman is widely regarded as one of the best in the history of DC movies. From the moment he appeared on screen in Man of Steel, it was clear that Cavill had the physicality and the charisma necessary to embody the iconic character.

One of the standout aspects of Cavill’s portrayal is his ability to balance the character’s strength and vulnerability. He captures Superman’s power and invincibility, while also conveying his sense of duty and compassion. Cavill’s performance makes it clear that Superman is not just a superhero, but a symbol of hope for humanity.

Cavill’s physical transformation for the role is also impressive. He trained extensively to build a muscular physique that is both imposing and aesthetically pleasing. This dedication to the character’s appearance is a testament to his commitment to the role.

Beyond his physicality, Cavill’s acting talent is on full display in his portrayal of Clark Kent. He brings a natural charm and warmth to the character, making it easy for audiences to root for him. His chemistry with other actors, particularly Amy Adams’ Lois Lane, adds depth and dimension to the character’s relationships.

Cavill’s performance as Superman has cemented his legacy in the superhero genre, making him one of the best actors to ever don the iconic red and blue suit. He has brought a fresh and nuanced take on the character, and his portrayal will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the defining performances of the DCEU era.

1. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot is undoubtedly the best actor in the DCEU, and her portrayal of Wonder Woman and Diana Prince has left an indelible mark on audiences. Her stunning performance in the role has not only brought the character to life but has also elevated the entire DCEU franchise to new heights. Her charisma, strength, and grace have won the hearts of millions of fans around the world.

Gadot’s performance as Wonder Woman is simply unmatched. Her portrayal of the Amazonian warrior captures both the fierce strength and compassionate heart of the character. Her physicality and athleticism are awe-inspiring, and she brings depth and complexity to the role that is rare in superhero movies.

As Diana Prince, Gadot’s performance is equally impressive. She portrays the character’s intelligence, wit, and determination with ease, making her a fully realized and relatable character. Her chemistry with co-star Chris Pine is electric, and their scenes together are some of the most memorable in the DCEU.

What makes Gadot’s performance truly exceptional is her ability to balance the character’s strength with her vulnerability. She imbues Wonder Woman with a sense of humanity that makes her relatable to audiences, despite her extraordinary abilities. Gadot’s performance is a masterclass in superhero acting, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else bringing the same level of nuance and depth to the character.

Her portrayal of the character has set a high bar for future actors to follow, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role after her. Gadot’s performance is a testament to her talent and dedication, and it’s clear that she is one of the best actors working in the superhero genre today.
