A new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has arrived.

After the first trailer for Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swung onto screens in December 2022, Spider-Fans are now getting a second glimpse into the sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The second trailer for the upcoming sequel, set in the animated universe of Miles Morales’ eponymous web-crawling superhero, has just arrived.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse sees Miles trying to balance school, family, and life as a superhero. As Vulture reports, the film is set to focus on the web-crawler being caught between “being a good kid and a good Spider-Man,” which don’t always go together.

Things get complicated when Miles’ BFF Gwen Stacy returns to seek his help from a villain — reported to be The Spot, a dimension-hopping villain — who threatens the Spider-Verse. This draws Miles into the multiverse of Spider-Man variants. According to Vulture:

"“We get an intro to Miguel O’Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, who wants Miles to choose between Spider-Manning and home life, as well as a whole slew of Spider-Man in jokes including a reference to ‘three Spider-Men’ meme and a Spider-Therapist who is annoyed at only having clients traumatized by the same issue.”"

Here’s how Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse references the MCU

What’s also surprising about the trailer is how it retcons the MCU and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Though the film exists outside of the MCU, we’ve seen Marvel’s Spider-Man films reference the world of Miles Morales before. In the first installment, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland’s Peter Parker met Miles’ small-time criminal uncle Aaron Davis. Then, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Electro laments about alternate realities, claiming “there’s got to be a Black Spider-Man out there somewhere,” which is a clear nod to Miles Morales.

However, this time, Across the Spider-Verse apparently responds with a reference of its own – and a shot at Holland’s Spider-Man and Dr. Strange. In the trailer, O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099) says to Morales, “Don’t get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd back on Earth-199999.”

While rumors are already circulating around Holland’s potential live-action appearance in the film, this direct reference to Holland’s Spider-Man strengthens the possibility of an appearance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe star.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in theatres on June 2, 2023.
