Chris Evans delivered some amazing performances as Captain America during his time in the MCU, but what was his best and worst Marvel movie?

There were many characters introduced in the Infinity Saga, but it’s hard not to think of those early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and immediately think of the six Avengers who help lay the groundwork for what would eventually become the vast and ever-expanding MCU.

The six original Avengers each played a crucial role in the MCU with the actors behind the characters appearing in several films during the Infinity Saga. Among the six was Chris Evans, who was tasked with the daunting task of taking on the role of one of Marvel’s oldest and most iconic characters: Captain America.

When he first took on the role, Evans was no stranger to the superhero genre having previously played the Human Torch in 20th Century FOX’s Fantastic Four films. While this experience proved helpful in the long run, it also made the expectations that much higher when Evans first appeared as the character back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

Fortunately for audiences (and Marvel Studios), Evans more than exceeded expectations in delivering a standout performance that would define the MCU’s first chapter. As Steve Rogers, Evan delivered one of his finest performances and helped to carry a trio of standalone films while also playing a key role in several of Marvel’s larger Avengers ensemble projects.

During his time in the MCU, Evans delivered some amazing performances and gifted fans with some of the most memorable moments in the history of the MCU. However, it’s fair to say that not every one of his appearances in the MCU shone as brightly as others. Which Marvel movies were Cap’s best and which could have been better?

** Note: For the purpose of this ranking, we only are looking at the movies Chris Evans played Captain America in a large or leading role. We are not including the movies in which he simply made a cameo.

7. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron was commendable, as he brought the beloved Marvel character to life once again with his impeccable acting skills. Evans managed to showcase the heroism, sincerity, and leadership that have become synonymous with the character of Captain America.

Evans’ performance in Age of Ultron was undoubtedly great, but it was not his best in the role. In his previous outings as Captain America, namely The First Avenger, Winter Soldier, and Civil War, Evans delivered some of his most powerful performances, portraying the character’s struggles and growth with nuance and depth.

In Age of Ultron, Evans’ portrayal of Captain America was somewhat limited by the character’s position as a team leader. While he displayed his natural charisma and commanding presence in leading the Avengers, he did not have the same opportunity to delve into the character’s inner conflicts or emotional struggles.

That being said, Evans’ performance in Age of Ultron was still remarkable, and he managed to imbue the character with his trademark blend of charm, courage, and integrity. He was able to effortlessly convey Captain America’s unwavering determination and commitment to justice, which have made the character such a beloved figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although it may not have been his best performance in the role, it was still a memorable and impressive addition to his already impressive body of work.

6. Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War, the third Avengers film in the MCU, brought together a massive ensemble cast of characters from across the MCU. Chris Evans reprised his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, a character he had been playing for seven years at that point. While Evans’ performance in the film is still strong, the sheer number of characters sharing the screen with him limits the amount of screen time and character development he receives.

In Infinity War, Captain America is part of a large group of heroes tasked with stopping the villainous Thanos from collecting the six Infinity Stones, which would grant him the power to wipe out half of all life in the universe. As such, there are many moving parts to the story, and Captain America’s individual story arc takes a bit of a backseat to the overall plot.

Additionally, with so many other characters vying for screen time, Captain America doesn’t have as many standout moments as he did in his solo films or even in the earlier Avengers movies. That being said, Evans still delivers a solid performance, and fans of the character will undoubtedly enjoy seeing him in action alongside so many other beloved MCU heroes.

5. The Avengers

While Evans shares the screen with a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner, his portrayal of the stalwart and virtuous Captain America is a standout performance in its own right in The Avengers.

As the leader of the Avengers, Evans brings a sense of authority, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his character which is both admirable and inspiring. He embodies the values of heroism and sacrifice that are at the heart of the Captain America persona, and his chemistry with the rest of the cast helps to establish the camaraderie and teamwork that are crucial to the Avengers’ success.

Although Evans may not have as much screen time or flashy action sequences as some of his co-stars, his performance is a crucial part of the film’s success. He brings a grounded and relatable quality to his portrayal of Captain America, making him a beloved and iconic figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even amidst the chaos and spectacle of The Avengers, Evans’ understated yet powerful performance shines through, cementing his place as a vital part of the superhero team.

3. Captain America: Civil War

Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America in Captain America: Civil War is widely considered one of the film’s most impressive highlights.
