All 8 The Conjuring Universe movies ranked from worst to best
8. The Nun
What can I say about The Nun? There was an attempt. The 2018 movie directed by Corin Hardy explores a different time period in The Conjuring universe taking place before the first movie in the ’50s. We follow a nun named Sister Iren (Taissa Farmiga) who is tasked with investigating an abbey in Romania with a priest named Father Burke (Demián Bichir). As they learn more about the abbey, they discover a demonic nun (Bonnie Aarons) who wants to take them down.
There’s not a lot The Nun does right, unfortunately. It’s a fun idea, but the plot is convoluted and stale, with multiple plot holes. And while I love Taissa Farmiga, her character is underdeveloped and uninteresting. The Nun 2 is currently in the works, so fingers crossed it’s an improvement on this one.
7. The Curse of La Llorona
The Curse of La Llorona is another forgettable entry in The Conjuring universe, sadly. The 2019 movie was directed by Michael Chaves and stars the wonderful Lisa Cardellini, which is a plus. But even a strong leading actress can’t make up for the boring plot points we’ve seen so many times before.
As evidenced by the name, the movie focuses on the Mexican folklore tale of La Llorona, a woman who drowned her children and now haunts the living looking for them. It takes place in the ’70s and follows protagonist Anna (Cardellini), a social worker and mom-of-two who must fight to keep her children safe from the spirit of La Llorona.
Though the portrayal of La Llorona is pretty creepy, the plot is just so formulaic that it’s impossible to get scared. Similar to The Nun, the characters in this one are also underdeveloped and it’s very hard to get invested in their story.
