With the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy coming to an end, we’re ranking all three of James Gunn’s Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
The Guardians of the Galaxy’s legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undeniable. The success of the first film not only solidified the Guardians as a beloved group of characters but also proved that Marvel could take risks and experiment with new properties that were relatively unknown to mainstream audiences.
One of the most significant contributions that the Guardians have made to the MCU is their expansion of the cosmic side of the universe. Prior to their introduction, the MCU was mostly focused on Earth-bound heroes and villains. However, the Guardians opened up a whole new world of possibilities, introducing us to the likes of Thanos, the Nova Corps, and the Kree Empire.
The Guardians’ irreverent and sarcastic personalities made them stand out from other heroes, and their films provided a much-needed break from the typical superhero fare.
The Guardians’ impact can also be seen in the crossover events that have become a hallmark of the MCU. The Guardians have played integral roles in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, showcasing their importance to the larger narrative of the universe. The crossover events have allowed for interactions between characters that would have been impossible otherwise, such as Rocket and Thor’s hilarious dynamic in Avengers: Infinity War.
While the future of the Guardians within the MCU remains unclear now that the final film in the trilogy from James Gunn has been released, the Guardians of the Galaxy have left their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their success paved the way for other lesser-known properties to be adapted, and their impact on the tone and scope of the MCU will be felt for years to come.
From their introduction to their final hurrah, we’re talking all three volumes in the Guardians trilogy from worst to best! Warning: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers ahead.
Note: For the purpose of this ranking, we’re only including the three Guardians of the Galaxy movies from James Gunn. This means you will not see Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, or the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in these rankings.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
As a Marvel fan, one has to admit that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the weakest of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. While the film still has its entertaining moments and a great soundtrack, it ultimately falls short of the high expectations set by the first film.
One of the biggest issues with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the over-reliance on humor. While the first film had a perfect balance of humor and heart, the sequel leans too heavily on jokes and one-liners, sacrificing character development and emotional depth in the process. The constant quipping and banter can feel forced at times and detract from the overall tone of the film.
Another issue with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the convoluted plot. The film introduces multiple storylines and subplots that ultimately feel disconnected and underdeveloped. The main plot involving Ego and his relationship with Star-Lord is interesting on paper, but the execution falls flat and lacks the emotional resonance of the first film.
The characterizations in Vol. 2 are also weaker than in the first film. While the characters are still entertaining and charismatic, they feel like caricatures of themselves at times, with their personalities and quirks turned up to 11. The film also introduces new characters like Taserface that don’t add much to the story and feel underdeveloped.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has its moments, it falls short of the high bar set by the first film. The over-reliance on humor, convoluted plot, weaker characterizations, and lack of stakes make it the weakest of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was an amazing origin story that defied the odds and introduced the Guardians in what was an incredible movie. It was a refreshing take on the superhero genre that introduced us to a cast of characters that were both hilarious and heartfelt. From the opening scene to the end credits, the film was a thrilling adventure that kept us on the edge of our seats.
One of the reasons why Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was so successful was due to its incredible cast of characters. Each member of the Guardians brought something unique to the table, from Peter Quill’s quick wit and charm to Drax’s deadpan humor and Gamora’s fierce determination. Oh and let’s not overlook the amazing duo that is Rocket and Groot.
Another aspect that made this film stand out was its incredible soundtrack. The use of classic rock and songs from the 70s was a stroke of genius that added an extra layer of depth to the film. The music helped to create a sense of nostalgia and emotion that perfectly complemented the film’s themes of friendship, love, and redemption.
Despite being a relatively unknown property, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was able to captivate audiences and become a box office smash hit. This was due in large part to the film’s incredible writing and direction. James Gunn brought his unique style and vision to the film, creating a world that was both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. The film’s blend of action, humor, and heart was a perfect balance that kept audiences engaged and entertained.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was an amazing origin story that defied the odds and introduced us to a group of lovable misfits that captured our hearts. It was a film that took risks and pushed the boundaries of what a superhero movie could be.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
We can confidently say that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the best of the Guardians movies. Not only did the film hit us with all the feels, but it also brought the signature humor that we have come to love from the Guardians franchise. It’s a perfect balance of heart and humor.
One of the most heartbreaking parts of the movie was Rocket’s backstory. We see a side of him that we’ve never seen before, and it’s a side that will stick with us long after the movie is over. His friends Lylla, Teets, and Floor were such lovable characters that we couldn’t help but feel for Rocket and the pain he went through losing them. This emotional depth is what sets Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 apart from the other films in the franchise.
The High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji, was a chilling villain in the movie. He was able to strike fear into the hearts of the audience and the Guardians themselves. The tension that he brought to the film was chilling, and he was a formidable opponent for our heroes to face. The High Evolutionary was the perfect villain to drive the narrative of the movie, and his character was expertly portrayed by Iwuji.
The movie was not only emotional and action-packed, but it also had its fair share of laughs. The humor was on-point, and it brought much-needed lightheartedness to the story. The jokes never felt forced or out of place, and they were seamlessly integrated into the narrative. The movie was able to balance the humor and the drama perfectly, making for a well-rounded and enjoyable film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a triumph. It was able to deliver a moving and emotional story while still maintaining the fun and excitement that we have come to expect from the Guardians franchise. The journey of the Guardians was an emotional rollercoaster, and we’re grateful for every moment. It’s a film that will stand the test of time as a true gem in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
