We have seen a lot of actors take on the role of Spider-Man over the years but who brought the legendary web-slinger to life the best?

Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and beloved superheroes of all time, and his legacy has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Since his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, Spider-Man has become a household name and has inspired countless comics, TV shows, movies, and merchandise. However, it is on the big screen where Spider-Man’s impact has been truly felt.

Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, was a groundbreaking success that helped to set a new standard for superhero films. Its success paved the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the countless superhero movies that followed. In recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has integrated Spider-Man into their world, with Tom Holland portraying the web-slinger in several films.

Beyond box office success, Spider-Man’s influence can also be seen in the way he has resonated with audiences. Peter Parker’s struggles with responsibility, loss, and identity have struck a chord with viewers, making Spider-Man a relatable and enduring character. His legacy is one of inspiration, innovation, and cultural impact, and has inspired generations of fans. Everyone has their favorite portrayal of the character, but who exactly has delivered the most memorable performance over the years?

Honorable Mentions: Nicholas Cage, Karan Soni, and John Mulaney

We begin our list with a series of quick honorable mention shoutouts designed to spotlight some of the amazing Spider-Man variants we meet within the animated Spider-Verse franchise: Nicholas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India, and John Mulaney as Spider-Ham. While the three characters play supporting roles in the Spider-Verse animated franchise, they left their stamp on the iconic character and deserve to be recognized within this list.

9. Chris Pine

Chris Pine embodies the quintessential characteristics of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, showcasing the hero’s basic but sincere actions at the beginning of the movie. Pine pays homage to the previous Spider-Man films, including the iconic kiss in the 2002’s Spider-Man movie, stopping the train in Spider-Man 2, and the infamous bad-boy attitude in Spider-Man 3.

Unfortunately, the hero’s appearance is short-lived as he meets his untimely end after coming into contact with Miles Morales. Despite his brief time on screen, Pine’s performance deserves to be mentioned among the ranking — just not too high.

His homage to the previous Spider-Man films is appreciated, and his brief but memorable appearance on screen leaves one longing for more.

8. Nicholas Hammond

Nicholas Hammond’s portrayal of Spider-Man in the 1970s TV series was a standout performance that helped bring the beloved Marvel superhero to life on the small screen. Hammond captured the essence of Peter Parker’s awkward and nerdy demeanor, while also conveying the humor and wit of Spider-Man’s alter ego. His portrayal of the web-slinging superhero was both endearing and thrilling, making him a fan favorite among viewers of the show.

However, while Hammond’s performance was certainly impressive for its time, it hasn’t quite held up as well as other iconic performances from that era, such as Adam West’s Batman. One reason for this may be the limitations of the special effects and technology available at the time, which can make the show feel dated to modern audiences.

Additionally, the campy tone of the show, which was popular in the 1970s, hasn’t quite resonated with today’s audiences who are used to more serious and realistic depictions of superheroes. Despite this, Hammond’s performance remains a beloved part of the character’s history, and his portrayal of the character paved the way for future adaptations of the web-slinging hero, such as the successful film franchise.

7. Oscar Isaac

Spider-Man 2099, also known as Miguel O’Hara first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #365 in August 1992 but it took over 30 years before the character made his official debut on the big screen. Our first big-screen adaptation of the character was voiced by a man who is no stranger to superhero franchises: Oscar Isaac.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Isaac brings Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 to life in a magical way bringing so much depth and emotion to the character via his vocal performance.

The Miguel we meet in the movie has experienced the tragic loss of his family, prompting him to embark on an extraordinary journey across various parallel universes. After tirelessly searching, he finally stumbled upon a universe where he discovered his own demise and made the decision to replace his variant self.

Consequently, he found solace in the embrace of a loving family once more. However, this act of altering the canon of existence had dire consequences on that universe, causing the very fabric of that dimension to unravel and tragically taking away his newfound family. From that moment onward, Miguel vowed never to tamper with the established order again and dedicated himself to preventing others from committing similar acts, utilizing every resource and capability at his disposal to safeguard the integrity of multiple realities.

So when Miles threatens to change canon by saving his father’s life, Miguel sets out to make sure Miles is unable to make any changes that could jeopardize the fabric of his universe. This essentially puts him in opposition to Miles and makes him an unexpected villain of sorts within the movie, which was a fun twist for moviegoers.

With another movie coming to wrap up the trilogy, there’s no telling what might be next for Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 but what we do know is that we can’t wait to see more of Isaac’s scene-stealing performance in the final chapter of the Spider-Verse trilogy.

6. Daniel Kaluuya

Who could have ever predicted one of the breakout characters from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be a guitar slinging, mohawked Spider-Man named Hobart?! Voiced by the Oscar-winning Daniel Kaluuya, Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk was an absolute standout within the second film in the Spider-Verse franchise.

Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk, embodies rebellion and defiance against authority. In the movie Across the Spider-Verse, his character is a major scene-stealer who becomes a crucial ally to Miles Morales.

On Earth-138, Spider-Punk is a British figure rather than an American rebel, as portrayed in the comics. Initially, Miles feels envious of Hobie’s connection with Gwen, but he soon realizes that Spider-Punk supports his own rebellious spirit, even standing up for him during a crucial moment in the movie. When Miguel confines Miles, it’s Hobie who reminds him of his unique abilities to escape by using his palms and venom strike. Despite Miles’ initial jealousy, Spider-Punk emerges as the one person he can truly trust within Gwen’s Spider-Band.

Kaluuya was absolutely brillant in the role, using his vocal abilities to craft a character who audiences quickly fell in love with. Fans are already eager to see more of the character in the final movie in the trilogy and it’s not hard to see why as the character managed to standout in a literal sea of Spider-Men with his unique style and flair.

5. Jake Johnson

Jake Johnson’s portrayal of Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a standout performance that perfectly captured the essence of a weary and jaded Spider-Man. Johnson’s voice acting was spot-on, imbuing the character with a gruff, sarcastic, and yet vulnerable tone that made him feel like a real person.

Throughout the movie, Johnson’s Peter B. Parker served as a mentor to Miles Morales, the newest Spider-Man, and their chemistry on-screen was magical. Johnson’s portrayal of the character’s emotional arc was also exceptional, as he grappled with the fallout of his failed marriage to Mary Jane and the loss of his Uncle Ben.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Peter B. Parker takes Miles to a diner to teach him how to be a superhero. Johnson’s delivery of the monologue where he explains the responsibilities that come with being a hero was both poignant and humorous, highlighting his skill as an actor.

Overall, Jake Johnson’s performance as Peter B. Parker in Into the Spider-Verse was a tour de force. He perfectly captured the character’s wit, charm, and emotional depth, and his chemistry with the other actors made for an incredibly engaging and entertaining viewing experience. Johnson’s contribution to the film undoubtedly played a significant role in making it the critical and commercial success that it was.

4. Tobey Maguire

Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Spider-Man is considered one of the most iconic performances in superhero movie history. In the first Spider-Man movie released in 2002, Maguire brought a relatable and vulnerable quality to the character, making him more than just a typical superhero. He captured the awkwardness of Peter Parker, a high school student who struggles to fit in, while also embodying the courage and determination of Spider-Man, the masked hero who fights to save New York City from evil.

Maguire’s chemistry with co-star Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson, was a highlight of the trilogy. Their on-screen romance was believable and heartfelt, adding an emotional depth to the films.

Maguire’s portrayal of Peter Parker also had a lasting impact on popular culture. He brought the character to life in a way that resonated with audiences, making him a fan favorite for years to come. In fact, his performance paved the way for other successful superhero franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tobey Maguire’s iconic performance was a defining moment in superhero movie history. He captured the essence of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, bringing a relatable and human quality to the character. His portrayal will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in cinema… but there’s something special about those who came after him.

3. Shameik Moore

Shameik Moore’s performances in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were nothing short of exceptional. He portrayed the character of Miles Morales with a level of authenticity and relatability that captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Moore’s ability to convey Miles’ emotional journey as a young, inexperienced superhero grappling with the weight of responsibility was a standout aspect of his performance. His nuanced portrayal of the character’s vulnerability and determination was honestly so captivating and his chemistry with his fellow voice actors was remarkable. He seamlessly integrated into an ensemble cast, effortlessly bouncing off the likes of Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya and Oscar Isaac to create a dynamic and entertaining group of heroes.

His vocal range and delivery were also noteworthy. He seamlessly transitioned between Miles’ moments of self-doubt and his moments of triumph, imbuing the character with an energy and enthusiasm that was infectious.

Originally, Moore ranked lower on this list but after getting to see him back in the role in Across the Spider-Verse, it was clear Moore had cemented himself among the all-time greats to ever play the role of Spider-Man.

His ability to bring Miles Morales to life in such a captivating and memorable way undoubtedly played a significant role in the film’s critical and commercial success. We got to see Miles come into his own in the second film which brought new depths and layers to the character and to Moore’s own performance.

There’s no telling where Miles story will go in the conclusion to the Spider-Verse trilogy, but what we do know is that Moore is going to likely one-up himself again with another breakout performance that will leave audiences wanting more! Let’s just hope Beyond the Spider-Verse won’t be the last time we’ll see this particular version of Miles on the big screen!

2. Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield’s performance as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is truly criminally underrated. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, Garfield’s portrayal of Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego is a standout performance that deserves recognition.

Garfield brought a unique energy to the role, capturing the wit and charm of Spider-Man while also imbuing him with a sense of vulnerability and emotional depth. His portrayal of Peter Parker as a socially awkward but intelligent teenager struggling with the loss of his parents and the discovery of his powers was both nuanced and relatable.

Garfield also had fantastic chemistry with his co-star Emma Stone, who played Peter’s love interest Gwen Stacy. Their on-screen romance felt authentic and heartfelt, with Garfield conveying a wide range of emotions from joy to heartbreak.

Garfield’s performance as Spider-Man is a testament to his talent and dedication as an actor. While the films themselves may have their flaws, Garfield’s portrayal of the iconic superhero is a shining example of what makes the character so beloved by fans around the world. It’s a shame that his performance is often overlooked, as it truly deserves more recognition and praise.

Since taking on the iconic role in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Holland has cemented himself as the definitive Spider-Man for a new generation of fans.

Holland’s Peter Parker is youthful, energetic, and relatable, capturing the character’s unique blend of teenage angst, humor, and heroism.
