Spock might just be the most iconic Star Trek character of all time thanks to the men who have brought the character to life.
When it comes to iconic Star Trek characters there are perhaps none that stand out quite so much as Spock. While he may not have been the captain of the Enterprise or acted as rear admiral like his friend, James T Kirk, that doesn’t mean that Spock wasn’t just as beloved and well-known among Starfleet.
And when we think of Spock, what or who comes to mind? Honestly, there have been a number of actors who have either portrayed or voiced the character of Spock over the years, however, there are three prominent actors who stand out for their live-action portrayals.
The three actors that have truly embodied the character and brought him to life on our screens are Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, and Ethan Peck. These are the three men we truly see when we think of Star Trek and Spock.
But which of these actors has been the best of the best when it comes to playing Spock and who is perhaps third in our hearts? Honestly, number one is hands down the easiest choice of all time, but it was definitely the second and third place picks that were a struggle. After all, these three actors have each brought something different to the role and the character. They have each made Spock their own and we have to thank them for that.
So which Spock is our favorite? And which Spock is perhaps not quite as dear to us?

3. Zachary Quinto
Okay, this was so hard to do, as I am a big fan of Zachary Quinto, but unfortunately, I have to say that he was perhaps my least favorite of the three primary Spocks. I do believe that Quinto embraced the role of Spock and took it very seriously that he was stepping into the shoes of a legend (Leonard Nimoy).
However, even as he took the role extremely seriously and brought that hyper-intelligence to the role that we expected, he also didn’t quite have the same gift for dry humor that Nimoy did. The way that Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner played off of each other as Spock and Kirk was next level. You could believe that at times they were enemies, and yet they were also very close friends.
There was no doubt that both men would sacrifice themselves for the other. And yet when we watched Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine play off of each other, they didn’t have that same spark. Simply put, there was just something missing from their interactions and a lot of it felt like it came from Quinto’s side.
Honestly, Zachary Quinto is a great actor and he has been brilliant in so many roles, but for some reason, his Spock just wasn’t as magical as we could have hoped for. And the fact that he really was one of the first people to step into the role for a live-action reboot after Nimoy probably didn’t help matters.

2. Ethan Peck
When Star Trek Discovery first introduced us to their Spock, played by Ethan Peck, I didn’t want to like him as much as I did. After all, we already had Zachary Quinto as our newest Spock. But then he did something special on screen, he made us believe in his heartbreak.
Thanks to Peck’s Spock, we finally had a real backstory for this character. We finally got to see what his family was like and who he was with his family. And we learned so much about what makes this man tick.
Ethan Peck brought a depth to the character that is hard to ignore. And he does it in a way that stays true to the original Leonard Nimoy Spock, while also modernizing him. The actor was able to humanize Spock in a way that I didn’t think was really possible.
Peck has made Spock his own and we have to love him for that. We believe that he is this brilliant, logical, and sometimes flawed character. He has already shown us that he can build relationships with other members of Star Fleet in a way that is meaningful and also
Overall, Ethan Peck has made us believe in him as Spock and we want to see more of him on our screens. We want to see him giving this character life for years to come. And maybe, we even want to see him getting a chance to take this character to the big screen as well.

1. Leonard Nimoy
If there is one name that is synonymous with Spock it would have to be Leonard Nimoy. And while he may have passed the torch to Zachary Quinto before his death, he was still and forever will be, our Spock.
Considering he was the very first man to step into this role, it makes sense that he might get top billing when it comes to ranking the actors who have played this character. However, it is also the fact that beyond the first TV series, he also returned for every movie after that which featured his crew of Star Trek characters.
And not only did he return for those projects, it really feels like he embraced them and his character wholeheartedly over the years. He even wrote a book about his life which he titled, I Am Spock (and if that doesn’t show his appreciation for the character, nothing will).
Over the years, Nimoy proved over and over again that he was Spock. He was able to be straightforward and logical, with a sense of dry humor that just worked. In many ways, he is beyond an iconic actor, he is a legend. Leonard Nimoy and his portrayal of Spock helped to bring a sense of reverence to the field of science fiction and fantasy that is hard to deny.
Without Nimoy, we wouldn’t have this character. And I just don’t think any other actor of his time could have brought Spock to life in such a way that he remains a part of our cultural lexicon. He is in many ways at the very heart of pop culture.
