Gather ’round, you beltalowda. Let’s celebrate the amazing show that is The Expanse and rank the characters in its incredible lineup.
Before I say anything else, let me just slap a friendly neighborhood THIS POST WAS MADE BASED ON PERSONAL OPINION warning on this beauty. My list most definitely does not look like yours.
The Expanse, a series that has taken the sci-fi genre by storm, stands tall as one of the best in its category. Set in a future where humanity has been pretty busy colonizing the solar system, The Expanse has a rich story that explores political intrigue, interplanetary tensions, and the struggles of various factions for control. What sets it apart from any other sci-fi show out there is its meticulous attention to scientific accuracy, grounding its futuristic vision in a plausible reality. This commitment to realism, paired with a stellar cast, makes The Expanse a must-watch for sci-fi fans.
At the heart of The Expanse‘s success are its characters, each bringing a unique flavor to the series. My top 10 characters in the show have become my favorites for their depth, complexity, and memorable moments. The show’s ability to balance intense action sequences with character-driven storytelling appeals to a broad audience with a taste for both excitement and emotional depth, which is a huge part of what makes this show spectacular.
As we take a look into the top 10 characters, it’s obvious that The Expanse has not only raised the bar for sci-fi television, but also etched its place among the best in the genre, captivating audiences with its engaging plotlines and well-crafted characters.
So… let’s talk about this top 10, shall we?

10. Marco Inaros
Marco Inaros is one of those characters you love to hate, landing him at number 10 on my list of top characters. He’s got this… magnetic charm that makes him super compelling to watch, even when he’s being the annoying troublemaker he is. Marco isn’t your typical bad guy; there’s a lot more to him than
how gorgeous his hair is
just being the villain of the story. He’s got layers and a kind of complexity that makes you think twice before just labeling him as the “bad guy.”
His character, brilliantly portrayed with a hot mix of incredibly dangerous charisma and ruthless determination, stands in stark contrast to the moral compass of the protagonists. As the leader of the Belter faction and a radical revolutionary, Inaros pursues a vision of Belter independence at any cost – even resorting to acts of terrorism that threaten the stability of the solar system. His charismatic leadership, paired with a willingness to sacrifice innocent lives for his cause, makes Marco Inaros a tricky adversary, adding a layer of moral issues to The Expanse‘s story. Inaros’s relentless pursuit of power and his willingness to manipulate others for his own gain make him a compelling and strong antagonist, embodying the darker shades of humanity’s struggle for survival in the vast expanse of space.
What’s cool about Marco’s character is how he shakes things up in the show. He’s not just causing chaos for the sake of it – there is a method to his madness. His actions and decisions really challenge the other characters and the viewers, making everyone question what they thought they knew about right and wrong. This isn’t a character you can easily dismiss or forget, even if he’s not the most likable guy in the series. Marco brings a different flavor to The Expanse, mixing things up and keeping everyone on their toes, which is why he’s earned his spot on the list, even if it’s not at the very top.

9. Alex Kamal
Alex lands at number 9 on my list, and it’s easy to see why he’s got a special place in the hearts of fans. He’s the talented pilot of the Rocinante and is pretty much the glue that keeps the team together up there in space. Alex is like that cool friend everyone wishes they had, especially when things get super intense. He’s got piloting skills that are off the charts, always pulling off these crazy maneuvers that save the day.
What really makes Alex stand out, though, is his overall vibe. He’s got this good-hearted, easy-going nature that brings a bit of lightness to the show. When things get heavy, you can count on Alex to crack a joke or flash a smile that cuts the tension. It’s not just about him being funny – he’s like that reliable buddy who’s always there when you need him, no matter what. He might not be at the very top of the list, as I see him more of a support guy than the one in the spotlight, but Alex definitely adds a lot of heart and soul to The Expanse, making the whole space journey feel a bit more like home.
In the books that The Expanse is based on, Alex Kamal’s fate takes a different turn compared to the TV show, and it’s a change that definitely caught the book fans off guard. Without giving away too many spoilers, let’s just say that Alex’s journey in the books goes a bit further, with his character continuing to evolve and play a significant role in the unfolding events of the series. This difference highlights one of the interesting aspects of adapting a book series to television: sometimes characters get a different treatment, whether it’s for narrative pacing, audience engagement, or… other creative reasons.

8. Naomi Nagata
Naomi Nagata. Grabbing the eighth spot on my list, let’s be real – she’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and she definitely isn’t mine.
Sure, she’s this super-smart engineer with a backstory that could make a rock cry, but there are a few things about her that just get on my nerves. For starters, she can be really intense. Like, we get it, the universe is a tough place, but sometimes her seriousness is just too much. It’s like she’s carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, and after a while, you just want to tell her to go run out of oxygen somewhere take a chill pill.
Then there’s her tendency to go rogue. Naomi has this habit of making big decisions on her own, thinking she knows best, which can be pretty annoying. Did nobody tell her that teamwork makes the dream work? Sometimes, it feels like she doesn’t trust her crew enough to let them in on her plans, which can create a ton of drama – and not the fun kind. And let’s not forget her romantic drama – it’s like a soap opera in space. It can be a bit much, especially when you’re just trying to enjoy some sci-fi action. So while Naomi definitely adds a lot to The Expanse with her smarts and complicated past, she’s got these little things about her that make her a bit of an eye-roller for me most of the time.
Also, let me just get this off my chest for a hot minute: there’s that one scene where Naomi literally runs out of oxygen in space and still, somehow, survives. It’s one of those moments where you’re on the edge of your seat, thinking, “Okay, this is it,” but then she pulls through. It’s a bit of a stretch, even for a sci-fi show. You’d think in such a realistic setting, running out of air in the vacuum of space would be a guaranteed ticket out of the story. But nope, Naomi defies the odds, which kind of messes with the show’s otherwise pretty solid sense of realism. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good survival story, but this felt like pushing it a bit too far. I credit her survival to good ol’ Plot Armor.

7. Klaes Ashford
Klaes Ashford, with his charismatic self, secures the 7th spot on my list. His character brings a unique and very much welcome blend of wit, resilience, and strategic thinking that keeps us viewers hooked and his people going. Ashford’s journey from a Belter pirate to a pivotal figure in the OPA (Outer Planets Alliance) adds depth to the story, putting his evolution and adaptability on display. With a magnetic presence on screen, Ashford’s character gives off a certain charm that sets him apart, making him a standout for me and many others. (Yes, Daniel, he’s ranked higher than Naomi and I am not sorry.)
Ashford’s significance in The Expanse lies in his ability to deal with the complexities of the Belt, serving as a bridge between various factions. His unwavering commitment to the OPA’s cause and his strategic thinking make him a force in the unfolding drama of the series.
Something else that sets Ashford apart is his perfect portrayal by David Strathairn. The charisma and gravitas that Klaes Ashford brings to the series contribute significantly to its overall appeal. His character’s ability to navigate the complexities of the Belt, paired with his unwavering commitment to the cause, makes him a compelling force in The Expanse’s universe. As the seventh-ranked character, Klaes Ashford leaves an undeniable mark, adding a touch of excitement and unpredictability to the unfolding drama of the series.

6. James Holden
James Holden. He’s sitting pretty as number 6 in my list, and I am not sorry. Why? Let’s be real – he can be a bit of a whiny pain in the ass. Sure, he’s the main guy and we see him grow from this hesitant leader to a full-blown hero-type character, which sounds cool on paper and has been done beautifully with other characters. But when it comes to Holden, there’s something about him that just doesn’t click for me (and others as well, I am not the only Holden hater out there).
First off, his journey from being all Jon-Snow-like “I don’t want to lead” to Aegon-Targaryen-like “I’m the hero this universe needs” feels a tad overdone. It’s like, we get it, Holden, you’ve got a lot on your shoulders – so do I but I don’t flaunt it (though it’s nothing like the fate of the solar system, but still) – but sometimes his whole hero act comes off as more annoying than inspiring. He’s always jumping into these big decisions, and I’m just sitting and watching, thinking, “Dude, slow down and think this through.”
And as for his leadership style, well, it’s a bit hit or miss. Sometimes he’s got it all together, but other times, it’s like watching someone trying to juggle an entire carton of eggs – it’s a bit of a mess.
Don’t get me wrong, Holden adds a lot to The Expanse and there’s a reason he’s the hero of the story. His heart’s in the right place and he’s got some seriously epic moments. But for some of us, he’s that character you just love to find faults in. He’s trying to do the right thing, sure, but the way he goes about it can be a bit much.

5. Bobbie Draper
Bobbie Draper in The Expanse is like the kick-butt, no-nonsense type that you can’t help but cheer for, landing her solidly at number 5 on my list. Starting out as a Martian marine and then going rogue, Bobbie’s story is like a rollercoaster ride of action and personal growth. She’s the one you see on the front line, jumping towards the danger, not afraid to throw a punch or stand up for what she believes in. This makes her super engaging to watch – there’s literally never a dull moment with Bobbie around.
Bobbie’s dynamic and at-times shaky relationship with Chrisjen Avasarala only adds complexity to the series. Bobbie, a no-nonsense Martian marine, and Avasarala, the savvy and political mastermind UN Deputy Undersecretary, form an unlikely but incredible alliance. Their interactions are some of my favorite moments in the series, and they’re a welcome blend of witty banter, contrasting perspectives, and occasional clashes of ideology. Bobbie and Avasarala’s evolving relationship not only contributes to the character dynamics but also highlights the show’s ability to explore the topics of loyalty, trust, and friendship in the middle of interplanetary tensions.
What I like the most about her is how she evolves over the series. She’s not just about the muscle (though she does have very nice ones) – there’s a lot of depth to her character. She starts off pretty loyal to Mars, but as things unfold, you see her questioning things, making some tough calls, and growing in ways that add layers to her character. This journey she’s on isn’t just about fighting – it’s about figuring out where she stands in a universe that’s constantly changing. That mix of action-packed scenes and personal development is what makes Bobbie such a standout in the show and why she nabs the number 6 spot on my list.

4. Josephus Miller
Josephus Miller, ranking at number 4 among my favorite The Expanse characters, is just… freaking awesome, and in so many ways. First off, his whole vibe as a space detective with that iconic hat is just super cool. It’s hot, it’s mysterious. He’s got this gritty, noir feel to him that sets him apart from everyone else in the show. Miller isn’t your typical hero – he’s kind of rough around the edges, and you never know if he’s going to play by the rules or make his own.
That unpredictability? *chef’s kiss* It’s all part of his charm.
Miller’s death in The Expanse absolutely broke my heart to the point I honestly debated if I wanted to continue watching. It’s a very important moment that leaves a lasting impact on both the characters and the overall plot of the show. As Miller meets his end while investigating the mysterious protomolecule, this sacrificial act is driven by a sense of duty and a desire to uncover the truth, resonates deeply. However, The Expanse surprises viewers when Miller makes a return in a unique and unexpected way. His reappearance, intertwined with the mysterious nature of the protomolecule, introduces a fascinating element of science fiction. Miller’s “resurrection” not only adds even more depth to the story, but also explores themes of consciousness, identity, and the consequences of meddling with advanced extraterrestrial technologies you’re not familiar with.
What really makes Miller a standout for me is how his story evolves. He starts off as this cynical, world-weary detective, but then he gets caught up in the big mysteries of the series, and that’s when things get really interesting. His absolute obsession with Julie Mao isn’t just some detective chasing a case – it becomes this deep, almost poetic journey that adds a ton of depth to his character. And let’s not forget about his endgame – Miller’s transformation and his role in the grand scheme of things are also pretty mind-blowing. His journey ties into the sci-fi elements of the show in such a unique way, making him not just memorable but a character you can’t help but love. Whether he’s dropping witty one-liners or getting deep into the show’s mysteries, Miller keeps you hooked every step of the way, and I really miss him. Sniffles.

3. Camina Drummer
This woman is everything.
Camina Drummer is one of those characters you honestly can’t help but adore, landing her right in the third spot for me. She’s a total badass, a boss, and over the series, she just keeps getting more and more awesome. What really makes Drummer stand out, other than her edgy and cool-looking makeup, is her rock-solid loyalty and her no-nonsense strength. She’s the kind of person who doesn’t just talk the talk: she walks the walk, and that’s super refreshing.
Drummer’s character arc in The Expanse is a testament to the show’s ability to come up with refreshing and engaging substories. Initially introduced as a tough-as-nails Belter faction leader, Drummer undergoes significant personal growth throughout the series. Her journey is marked by resilience, adaptability, and a big loyalty shift. Her leadership skills and unwavering commitment to the Belt make her a heavy and essential presence in the series, but it’s her internal conflicts and moral dilemmas that truly elevate her character. As she deals with what it means to be loyal to her people, she also faces the complexities of alliances with conflicting factions. Drummer’s evolution from a practical and stoic leader to someone navigating the delicate balance between duty and conscience adds depth to the series, making her a standout character in a lot of people’s books.
I love that, though she does get introduced as a side character, Drummer quickly shows everyone she’s not to be underestimated. She’s tough as nails, but it’s not just about being strong and fierce. There’s a real heart to her character. She’s deeply committed to her crew and her beliefs, and that’s something that shines through in every decision she makes. You get to see her deal with some pretty intense stuff, and she handles it like a champ. It’s this combo of being fiercely loyal, incredibly brave, and genuinely caring that makes her my personal favorite character in The Expanse and my top 3 in this list.

2. Chrisjen Avasarala
Chrisjen Avasarala is easily one of the coolest characters in The Expanse, and it’s no wonder she’s sitting pretty at number 2 on my list. She’s this amazing blend of political brains and straight-talking attitude, which is a breath of fresh air in the middle of all the space drama that goes on in the series. Avasarala isn’t just another political figure – she’s the one pulling off some seriously clever moves, playing the game like a pro while pretending she’s a noobie. Her way of handling things, with a mix of sharp wit and no-nonsense diplomacy, puts her on the favorites radar of many fans.
Avasarala undergoes a remarkable transformation in the series, going from a politically savvy UN Deputy Undersecretary to a central figure shaping the fate of humanity in the colonized solar system. Her character evolves from an expert political player navigating the corridors of power to a key strategist and leader in the face of interplanetary conflicts. Her wit, intelligence, and unapologetic approach make her a force to be reckoned with, and as the series progresses, Avasarala’s role expands beyond political shenanigans. She becomes a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to the greater good. Her journey not only displays her ability to navigate complex political landscapes but also highlights her resilience in the face of personal and societal challenges.
What really makes Avasarala shine, though, is how she handles all the curveballs thrown her way. Whether she’s dealing with Earth’s politics, Martian power plays, or Belters’ issues, she’s always got a plan. And it’s not just her smarts – it’s her style too. She’s got this way of delivering zingers with a side of elegance, and you can’t help but love her for it. Avasarala’s not just in the story for the sake of drama, she’s there making a real difference, and that’s why she’s a solid number 2 in my eyes.

1. Amos Burton
Amos Burton isn’t just a character- he’s a whole vibe, and a very hot vibe at that. This guy is the definition of a tough cookie with a heart, wrapped up in a package that’s… just way too easy on the eyes. He’s got this rugged, no-nonsense exterior that makes you think he’s all about muscle and brawn. But then, you get these moments where his softer side peeks through, showing there’s more to him than just being a tough guy, and that is where I fell in love. It’s this mix of tough and tender that keeps everyone around him on their toes and makes him a fan favorite.
Amos’ backstory is a bit like a puzzle. He’s got shadows in his past that he doesn’t talk about much, adding an air of mystery that
just adds to his hotness
is super intriguing. You can’t help but wonder what he’s been through to make him the way he is. And the way he navigates through the chaos of the show’s universe, with its space dogfighting and political shenanigans, is just cool as hell. He’s not just throwing punches – he’s often the voice of reason in a crazy situation, showing off his smarts along with his
amazing looks
strength.
Then there’s the whole “Amos being hot” thing that may or may not be obvious to viewers. I mean, come on. The man has this effortless, rugged charm that’s absolutely electrifying and magnetic. He’s not your typical polished hero: he’s got this raw, real vibe that’s incredibly sexy appealing. Those intense eyes, the occasional smirk, and the way he carries himself – you can’t help but be drawn to him. Whether he’s in the thick of action or just chilling on the ship, Amos brings this undeniable presence to the screen that will keep you thinking about him for hours after an episode. In a show full of complex characters and wild space adventures, Amos Burton stands out as the badass with a heart of gold and the kind of hotness that’s as much about attitude as it is about looks.
And that’s it.
That’s my list. Whether you agree or not – and that’s ok if you do – these 10 characters have all shaped the series to what it is now, and make it the amazing show we all love to watch – and cry because it ended.
