10 Marvel characters that frankly should have been in the MCU by now
7. Squirrel Girl
Doreen Green is a tricky one to establish canon for. For a while, Squirrel Girl was getting really powerful. She was established as one of the most powerful characters in the MCU having beaten everyone from Doctor Doom to Thanos with just her squirrel sidekicks and her squirrel-based powers.
As her popularity grew, she was worked into more and more characters backstories. In fact she was shown to have a past relationship with Squirrel Girl. When some people tried to backpedal, Emma Frost entered Wolverine’s mind and found a very friendly Squirrel Girl hanging out with a couple of other women in a room in his brain labeled “Sexual fantasies” so…retcon that.
What makes a story with Doreen a little difficult though is that at some point, when Squirrel Girl was suddenly more popular than she had ever been, Marvel decided to drop the most powerful retcon nuke on her you can do in comics, they made her ridiculously young and gave her an all-ages adventure. In the comics, she was just out of high school which would be bad enough for Wolverine if it wasn’t for the fact that Doreen’s catchphrase in the NON-comic Squirrel Girl books has the catchphrase of “Doreen Green, age 15”. Yikes, Logan.
Ignoring her tricky history, there are two things that always stay the same for Doreen. One, an absolute unwavering sense of optimism, and two, an incredible track record for scoring defeats over giant foes. In fact, after her youthening one of the first people she stopped was *checks notes* Galactus. She literally just chilled with him and talked him out of his plan.
While I don’t think Squirrel Girl is the kind of thing that makes a good movie I absolutely think having a Squirrel Girl show on Disney+ would be a fantastic idea as long as they don’t cater to too young an audience where she won’t easily fit into MCU cameos. And luckily, they already had the perfect actress for her too. Milana Vayntrub actually was cast as her for the official New Warriors show that got canceled before the pilot even aired and she was PERFECT for it.
And while only a few scenes of her in action ever surfaced, she did play Doreen Green in the Spotify original “Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show” and did so to perfection. I think having a Marvel series featuring someone just being positive and getting stuff done could be a nice change of pace for how broody most Marvel TV shows become.
Alright, on to the next two.
