The Flash has been a reliable staple of The CW’s Arrowverse line-up for so long but will the show be coming to an end after season 8?

The Flash has had a great run on The CW. The veteran Arrowverse series has been a part of the network’s programming since 2014 and was officially declared its biggest hit after the conclusion of its first season. Now, here we are eight seasons later and it’s still among the network’s most-watched programming.

With that in mind, there is increasing speculation that the show’s days are numbered. Though there hasn’t been any kind of indication that The CW plans on ending it yet, fans are beginning to discuss whether the Scarlet Speedster’s time on our TV screens is drawing to a close.

Is The Flash cancelled?

No, The Flash has not been cancelled. In fact, it remains very much alive and well as it has recently been renewed for an eighth season – which makes it now the joint-longest-running Arrowverse series with parent show Arrow.

However, as Arrow concluded on eight seasons, it does raise the question as to whether The Flash will bow out on the same number of seasons too.

Will The Flash season 8 be the show’s last?

Aside from the fact that The Flash‘s eighth season confirms that the show will be on screens for as long as Arrow was, there are other reasons that the fans think The CW plans on bringing it to an end very soon.

More from Arrowverse

Let’s start with the fact that the season will open with a five-episode event, titled “Armageddon”, that will feature multiple individual crossovers. Confirmed by CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz on the day of The CW Upfronts, the Scarlet Speedster will interact with fellow Arrowverse heroes. And that is something that fans see as a potential indicator of season 8 being The Flash‘s last season.

There is also the fact that reception of the show has been rather divisive in recent years and its ratings are declining – but then again, the same applies to every show on network television.

Grant Gustin did reveal last year that he was in talks to have his Flash contract – which was supposed to end after season 7 – extended until season 9, so there’s a strong possibility that the show will run until then at least.
