There have been some amazing sequel films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but which of the Marvel sequels is the best of the best?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken the world by storm since its inception in 2008 with the release of Iron Man. Since the release of Iron Man, the MCU has seen over 30 movies and numerous TV shows, becoming a cultural phenomenon and a dominant force in the entertainment industry.
One of the many strengths of the franchise has been its ability to launch new franchises through amazing origin films. These movies have helped to introduce characters who would go on to become key figures within the MCU and lay the foundation for the follow-up films that would follow.
While Marvel has a winning record of serving up amazing origin stories, its track record with sequels is a bit more hit and miss. While there are many sequels fans adore that did a perfect job of building upon the foundation laid in the origin films, others have fallen a bit flat leaving fans wondering what went wrong.
From the dark and gritty sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to the mind-bending Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, join us as we explore the best and worst of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequels.

9. Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World is widely regarded as one of the weakest Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. There are several reasons why it falls short compared to its predecessors and other films in the franchise.
The film lacks a compelling villain. Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves, is a one-dimensional character with no clear motivation other than seeking to destroy the universe. His lack of depth and charisma makes him forgettable and uninteresting, resulting in a lack of tension and stakes throughout the film.
Then there is the fact that the story is convoluted and poorly executed. The film attempts to balance multiple subplots and character arcs but fails to develop any of them meaningfully. The relationship between Thor and Jane Foster feels forced and underdeveloped, while the conflict between Thor and Loki lacks the emotional weight and complexity that made their previous interactions so captivating.
It also doesn’t help that the film’s tone is uneven, shifting between awkward attempts at humor and dark, serious moments without finding a consistent balance. The action sequences are underwhelming and lack the grandeur and spectacle of other MCU films.
Overall, Thor: The Dark World fails to deliver on the expectations set by its predecessors and the wider MCU. Its lack of a compelling villain, convoluted story, and uneven tone make it one of the most disappointing entries in the franchise.

8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was highly anticipated after the success of the first film, which was a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the sequel did not quite capture the same magic as the original, it was still a fun movie that entertained audiences with its humor, action, and memorable characters.
One of the main issues with the film was its pacing. The story dragged on in some parts, and there were several subplots that felt unnecessary and did not add much to the overall narrative. Additionally, the humor felt forced at times, and some of the jokes did not land as well as they did in the first film.
Despite these flaws, the film still had plenty of redeeming qualities. The chemistry between the Guardians was still as strong as ever, and the addition of new characters like Mantis added to the film’s overall charm. The soundtrack was also another highlight, with classic ’80s hits that added to the film’s fun and nostalgic vibe.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not have captured the same magic as the first film, it was still a fun and entertaining movie that continued to showcase the unique and lovable characters that audiences fell in love with.

7. Iron Man 2
Iron Man was an amazing film so there were really high expectations for the film’s sequel… which sadly failed to live up to the high expectations set by its predecessor. Despite having an impressive cast and an intriguing plot, the film was widely regarded as a disappointment and unsatisfying.
The biggest problem was that the film suffered from an overcrowded storyline. The addition of too many new characters and plotlines left little room for character development or meaningful interactions between the characters. This led to a lack of emotional depth and made it difficult for audiences to invest in the story.
While there were some amazing characters introduced, the film’s villains were underwhelming. Mickey Rourke’s portrayal of Whiplash was unconvincing, and his motivations were poorly developed. Additionally, the character of Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell, lacked the menacing presence of a true villain.
When you look back at Iron Man 2 it’s clear the movie lacked a clear sense of direction. The plot meandered from one subplot to another without a clear overarching theme or goal. This made it difficult for audiences to follow along and made the film feel disjointed.
As great as Iron Man was, Iron Man 2 was a disappointing sequel that failed to capture that same magic. Its overcrowded plot, underwhelming villains, lackluster action scenes, and lack of direction left audiences feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.

6. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Avengers: Age of Ultron was an amazing movie, filled with action-packed sequences, witty humor, and heart-wrenching moments that had fans on the edge of their seats. However, despite its many successes, it didn’t quite match the magic of the first Avengers film.
One of the reasons for this was the heightened expectations that came with the sequel. The first Avengers movie was a monumental achievement, bringing together several superheroes for the first time on the big screen. The second movie had a tough act to follow, and while it certainly delivered in terms of spectacle and entertainment, it didn’t quite capture the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of the first film.
That being said, Avengers: Age of Ultron did have some standout moments that made it a must-see for Marvel fans. The introduction of Vision and Wanda was a true highlight, with both characters bringing fresh energy and dynamic to the Avengers team. Vision’s calm and composed demeanor, coupled with his immense power, made him an instant fan favorite. And Wanda’s emotional journey, from a reluctant villain to a hero who had to confront her own fears and demons, was a powerful storyline that resonated with audiences.
While Avengers: Age of Ultron may not have quite matched the magic of the first Avengers movie, it was still an incredible and worthwhile addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The introduction of Vision and Wanda was just one of the many reasons why this movie was a standout hit with fans.

5. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a visually stunning film with some amazing cameos, but the way it handled the Scarlet Witch’s story fell flat. Wanda was a complex and interesting character in WandaVision, but in Multiverse of Madness, she was reduced to a one-dimensional villain who was only interested in destroying everything in her path in order to get what she wanted. This was a disappointing turn for a character who had so much potential.
WandaVision showed Wanda’s journey from a grief-stricken woman to a powerful witch who was finally starting to heal. Multiverse of Madness undid all of that growth, turning Wanda into a villain who was willing to destroy the multiverse to get her children back. This was a disservice to fans and to the character.
What helped nudge the film to the middle of the ranking was the film’s cameos which featured appearances from several fan-favorite characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The cameos in Multiverse of Madness were amazing in getting to see John Krasinski, Anson Mount, Hayley Atwell, Lashana Lynch, and Patrick Stewart. Krasinski was a fan-favorite choice to play Mr. Fantastic, and he did not disappoint. It was so fun seeing Mount back as Black Bolt, Lashana Lynch as Captain Marvel was perfection, and Atwell was incredible as always as Captain Carter. Stewart’s appearance as Professor X was a major surprise, and it was great to see him back in the role.
Overall, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a mixed bag. It was a visually stunning film with some amazing cameos, but the way it handled the Scarlet Witch’s story fell flat. Fans of the character were likely disappointed with her portrayal in the film, and the film’s weak story was a letdown.

4. Ant-Man and The Wasp
Ant-Man and The Wasp served as an excellent follow-up to the original Ant-Man film. The movie built upon the established characters and world-building of the previous installment while introducing new and exciting elements to the franchise. The chemistry between Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly was a highlight, with their witty banter and teamwork bringing a refreshing dynamic to the superhero genre.
The film’s plot was well-crafted, with a cleverly constructed mystery that kept the audience engaged throughout. The action sequences were also well-done, with the creative use of the characters’ size-shifting abilities adding a unique flair to the fights.
One minor flaw in the film was the underutilization of the villain, Ghost. While the character had an intriguing backstory and motivation, their role in the plot felt somewhat disconnected from the rest of the story. Additionally, the film’s pacing was occasionally uneven, with some scenes feeling rushed while others dragged on.
Despite these minor flaws, Ant-Man and The Wasp was a successful follow-up to the original film. It continued to expand upon the unique and humorous tone of the franchise while delivering engaging action and character development. The film was a fun and entertaining addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and an enjoyable follow-up to the first Ant-Man movie.

3. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Spider-Man: Far From Home is an exceptional sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and a perfect addition to the MCU. Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, the film takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and follows Peter as he goes on a school trip to Europe while trying to balance his superhero responsibilities.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to expand on the themes and character development established in the previous film. Far From Home delves deeper into Peter’s internal struggles as he grapples with the loss of his mentor Tony Stark and the pressure to fill his shoes as a hero. This emotional journey is expertly woven into the action-packed plot, making for a compelling and satisfying viewing experience.
The film’s use of special effects and action sequences is top-notch, as expected from a Marvel production. The battles against the Elementals are visually stunning, and the final showdown with Mysterio is a highlight of the film. But what really sets Far From Home apart is its clever use of Mysterio’s illusions to challenge Peter’s perception of reality, creating a thrilling and mind-bending narrative.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is a perfect sequel film in the MCU. It successfully builds upon the foundation set by the previous film while delivering a thrilling and emotionally resonant story. With excellent performances, stunning visuals, and clever storytelling, this film is a must-watch for Marvel fans and moviegoers alike

2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a stunning sequel to Black Panther. It brought so much emotion, Namor was one of the best MCU villains we’ve seen and Angela Bassett was absolutely flawless as Ramonda — a performance that should have netted her the Oscar.
The film picked up after the events of Black Panther, following the death of King T’Challa. The world is still mourning his loss, and Wakanda is in a state of flux. The Dora Milaje are struggling to maintain order, and the country is facing threats from both within and without.
In the midst of all this, Namor the Sub-Mariner arrives in Wakanda. He is a powerful and charismatic leader, and he quickly gains the support of many Wakandans. However, he also has a dark secret, and he is not who he seems to be.
Namor is one of the best MCU villains we’ve seen. He is complex and well-developed, and he is played brilliantly by Tenoch Huerta. He is a threat to Wakanda, but he is also a tragic figure.
Angela Bassett is also excellent as Ramonda. She brings so much emotion to the role, and she is absolutely stunning as the Queen of Wakanda. She is a powerful and strong leader, and she is determined to protect her country and her people. If you weren’t moved by her phenomenal performance in the film, you clearly need to rewatch the film.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a must-see for fans of the first film. It is a stunning sequel that brings so much emotion, action, and excitement. It is a film that will stay with you long after you leave the theater.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is undoubtedly one of the best Marvel sequels and a truly amazing movie. Directed by the Russo brothers, this film manages to successfully blend superhero action with political intrigue, resulting in a thrilling and thought-provoking story.
One of the film’s strengths is its portrayal of Captain America as a character struggling to find his place in a world that has changed drastically since he last fought in World War II. Chris Evans gives a standout performance as Steve Rogers, showcasing the character’s unwavering sense of duty and honor, while also exploring his vulnerabilities and doubts.
The Winter Soldier himself, played by Sebastian Stan, is a formidable and mysterious villain, with a connection to Captain America’s past that adds emotional weight to their clashes. The action scenes are expertly choreographed and executed, with a focus on practical stunts and hand-to-hand combat that make them feel more grounded and intense.
But what really sets The Winter Soldier apart is its examination of the dangers of surveillance and government control. The film raises important questions about the balance between security and individual liberty and the potential consequences of sacrificing the latter for the former. This theme is particularly relevant in today’s world, making the film feel even more resonant and impactful.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a fantastic film that balances character development, action, and political commentary with aplomb. It’s a testament to the power of superhero stories to explore important themes and offer thought-provoking entertainment.
