Let’s rank these four fine actors and their performances as the iconic Captain Pike in the Star Trek franchise. Engage!

In the vast universe of Star Trek, amidst the iconic Captains, leaders, and adventurers, one name shines with a unique glow: Captain Christopher Pike.

Before the swashbuckling Captain James T. Kirk commanded the Enterprise, there was the calm and collected Captain Pike. Though his original incarnation didn’t get the green light for a full-fledged series, fate (or, you know, maybe the network executives who saw the chance for profit) couldn’t keep Pike out of the screens for long. Over the decades, this early captain of the USS Enterprise has been brought to life by not one, but four different and talented actors across varied timelines, films, and series. Each portrayal added a layer, an emotion, and a distinct style to the character, ensuring Pike’s legacy within the Star Trek canon.

Pike’s journey is one of heroism, sacrifice, and tragedy. That fateful incident involving delta radiation, which changed the course of his life by paralyzing him, shows off the character’s depth and his Starfleet valor. Even when confined to a wheelchair, Pike’s spirit remained unbroken. Recent explorations into Pike’s past and mind in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have gone even deeper into the emotional weight of predestined tragedy and it’s his resilience and undying spirit that has made him a staple in the series.

However, beyond the fictional narratives and timelines, much of the magic that Captain Pike brings to the screen can be credited to the actors who’ve stepped into his boots. Their interpretations, nuances, and acting prowess have solidified Pike’s position in the Star Trek hall of fame.

So, let’s take a look at these fine gents and see where they rank when it comes to their performances and contributions as Captain Pike.

4. Jeffrey Hunter

Appeared in: Star Trek (original pilot)

Long before the concept of Star Trek became the phenomenon that it is, the pilot episode launched the franchise into the pop-culture orbit in the same way that the USS Enterprise is launched into space. Imagine the excitement of stepping onto the USS Enterprise for the very first time, taking a deep breath, and boldly going where no actor had gone before. That was Jeffrey Hunter, the OG Captain Pike, in 1965’s Star Trek‘s pilot episode “The Cage.”

Hunter didn’t just put on a captain’s hat – he set the stage for every other depiction of Captain Pike that followed his. While his screen time might’ve been shorter than deserved, his charisma and energy resonated with fans around the globe and he’s become a beloved staple of the Star Trek franchise ever since.

The character might not have become the instant hit that William Shatner’s legendary Captain James T. Kirk but this was merely the beginning for Captain Pike and the journey that he would eventually take us on. The Star Trek franchise might have initially moved away from the character, but he did find his way back into our hearts before too long.

As beginnings go, this one was pretty great!

3. Bruce Greenwood

Appeared in: Star Trek (2009)

After the turn of the century, J.J. Abrams was tasked with relaunching the Star Trek universe with a modern day reboot – one that would have its own continuity while also paying tribute to the originals. This modern revamp is known for featuring  the most gorgeous Captain Kirk played by the even more gorgeous Christopher Pine, and has thus far spawned three movies, Star Trek released in 2009, Star Trek into Darkness 2013, and Star Trek Beyond in 2016 (with a fourth one in the works).

But Captain Kirk wasn’t the only beloved captain to make a comeback on the big screen. Bruce Greenwood stepped into the iconic boots of Captain Pike. Bringing a contemporary flair, Greenwood’s Pike seamlessly transitioned into the role of a “guiding light” for Captain Kirk. His seasoned demeanor undeniably demanded attention, elevating every scene he graced.

However, despite Greenwood’s powerful presence, his time as Pike in the Abrams’ films felt pretty brief, with the narrative spotlight primarily on the younger and core cast. Because of that, this rendition of Pike, while impactful, was more of a supporting role, leaving us wanting more of Greenwood’s portrayal. We love to see him involved in that eventual fourth movie if they could make it work.

2. Sean Kenney

Appeared in: Star Trek: The Original Series

Gracing the screen with an unforgettable presence in Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Menagerie,” Sean Kenney’s rendition of Captain Pike was a masterclass in non-verbal performance. Constrained to a wheelchair and unable to voice his thoughts, Pike’s anguish, regrets, and hopes were all conveyed through the subtle movements of Kenney’s eyes and the silent aura he projected. The actor’s portrayal became emblematic of the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

This episode aired during the first season of the show and it remains a testament to the power of silent storytelling, showcasing that emotions can often resonate more profoundly without words.

Kenney’s time as Captain Pike might have been brief, but the shadows of his performance linger long after the credits roll. The dichotomy between the vibrant Pike of the past and the somber, scarred Pike of “The Menagerie” paints a poignant picture of a hero’s journey, marked by both triumphs and tragedies. Even though he he no dialogue, Kenney’s rendition stands tall in the annals of Star Trek history, demonstrating that sometimes, the most profound performances are those that transcend words, resonating deep within the heart of the viewer.

1. Anson Mount

Appeared in:  Star Trek: Discovery, Short Treks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount’s Pike is

absolutely dreamy

a breath of fresh air in the ever-expanding Star Trek universe.

In a series filled with complex characters and storylines, Mount’s portrayal stands out, effortlessly blending the old-world charisma of the original series with the distinct storytelling of today. He brought a refined balance of leadership, vulnerability, and moral clarity, giving us long-time Trekkies a dose of sweet nostalgia for while also offering something new and engaging for the younger audience. Pike’s return in Star Trek: Discovery wasn’t just a cameo – it was an really well-done character revival, and much of the credit goes to Mount’s understanding and portrayal of Pike.

With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Paramount+ took a calculated leap of faith with a series that revolves around Mount’s Captain Pike and his adventures. And it’s not hard to see why. Anson’s Pike gives off a warmth and wisdom that feels both comforting and inspiring. Mount’s Pike reminds us of the foundational principles of Starfleet. As the captain of the Enterprise, prior to Kirk, he sets a tone and standard that resonates with both new and old fans, keeping Captain Pike an integral part of the Star Trek legacy.

And he also has the best hair out of anyone in Star Trek.

Which iteration of Captain Pike is your favorite in the Star Wars lore? Are you a fan of Strange New Worlds?
