We’ve seen more actors play Captain James T. Kirk than you might think, but who played the Star Trek legend the best?

Star Trek is one of the most iconic franchises in all of television and film. It has entertained audiences for decades, with the saga’s various incarnations constantly reinventing it for new generations. But sometimes, you just can’t beat the classic stories and characters.

Few characters have commanded the USS Enterprise as impressively as Captain James T. Kirk, a Star Trek legend that has been portrayed by not one, not two, but three iconic and impressive actors in a span of six decades.

Kirk’s character is known to have delivered dramatic and memorable quotes and, although often recognized for the melodrama, Kirk’s character is far more complex than most give him credit for. Every actor who has taken up the role has brought their own interpretation to it, enriching the Star Trek universe. Without Captain James Tiberius Kirk, we wouldn’t have had Star Trek at all.

Three actors have played the confident Captain Kirk that we remember, all with their own unique renditions of the man who famously dismisses the concept of a no-win scenario rank among each other. However, they weren’t the only stars to bring him to life. Let’s take a look back at the five portrayals of the Star Trek legend.

5. Sandra Smith

Appeared in: Star Trek: The Original Series

Yep. A woman has once played Captain Kirk!

The classic Star Trek series wasn’t shy when it came to having some very wacky plots, and “Turnabout Intruder” isn’t an exception to this. In fact, it actually took things up a notch. Here we have Janice Lester, played by Sandra Smith, as one of Captain Kirk’s past love interests. Only this time, she’s not just upset. She’s downright determined to grab Kirk’s captain seat. And how does she plan to do it? By swapping bodies with him, of course.

It’s an intense and strange twist that mostly works due to the outlandish world that Star Trek: The Original Series had introduced us to over the course of its three-season run. This episode was infamous for being the last ever episode of the classic show, but it digs deep into desires, dreams, and identity. Sandra Smith, stepping into Kirk’s shoes (or body), delivers a pretty good performance. She not only captures Kirk’s essence but adds her own unique flair to his persona. It’s like watching Kirk act through new lenses.

Perhaps if the show had continued past this season, we could have seen more exploration of this storyline and more chances for Smith to play Kirk. Nevertheless, she did a great job in the role in just one episode!

4. Jimmy Bennett

Appeared in: Star Trek (2009)

We might be used to seeing Captain James T. Kirk as a confident leader on the USS Enterprise, but even he has origins. One of the more recent adaptations showcased a little bit of those.

Who remembers that one moment in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot in 2009 when we see a young, feisty James Kirk zoom away in an antique car, with Beastie Boys playing in the background? Jimmy Bennett is the young talent who brought that scene and young James T. Kirk to life. Not only does he nail the rebellious, wild spirit of our iconic captain, but he also gives us a peek into a different world – a world where young Kirk had a rocky childhood on Earth instead of living off-planet.

Thanks to Bennett’s performance, we see how the Kelvin timeline gives a fresh spin to our classic Star Trek stories. His portrayal connects beautifully with the older versions of Kirk, especially with the drop-dead gorgeous Chris Pine’s version, and drops a clever hint to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. You know, the one where Kirk admits he always felt he’d have a young, wild end?

It was a nice little nod to a chapter in Kirk’s history that isn’t acknowledged as much, and a look into the origins of one of TV and film’s greatest heroes – one that was specific to the timeline of the modern movies.

3. Paul Wesley

Appeared in: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

After a promising debut, Paul Wesley’s portrayal of Captain Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds lands him in third place on our list. While Wesley’s Kirk does embrace some of the most favorite aspects of Shatner’s immortal rendition, he also does his own thing for the character.

The way he plays Kirk brings a sense of cool professionalism and self-deprecating humor to the character, which some viewers find funny and entertaining. But his portrayal is often not favored, largely due to the inconsistent mannerisms that don’t quite match up to the Kirk from the Original Series.

Wesley’s Kirk is compassionate and excited about exploring new worlds and civilizations, balancing these traits with a dose of disdain and youthful confidence. Those aren’t bad traits – they’re quite fun traits to watch and that have the potential to expand in future seasons, but they are yet to fully bloom. Wesley’s portrayal is very well done, showcasing strong potential for where he could take the character next. And we hope to see more of him in the role. It may not yet be on the same level as the other two fellow actors’ interpretation, but we have a feeling he could move up this list with more time.

2. Chris Pine

Appeared in: Reboot film series (Star Trek, Into Darkness, and Beyond)

Chris Pine is absolutely gorgeous takes the second spot with his edgy and exciting portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in the Kelvin-timeline Star Trek movies. Pine’s Kirk is not quite the ideal type of officer in Starfleet, a reluctant recruit who joins the organization as a last resort. This fun and unique take on the character, paired with Pine’s powerful performance, gives Kirk an unpredictability that adds to the excitement of the modern Star Trek films.

Pine’s Kirk also has natural leadership skills, though these often lead to conflict with his crew. His relationship with Spock is a wonderful example of what comes out of that conflict, with their tension-filled dynamic evolving into mutual respect over the course of the movies.

While the action-packed nature of the Kelvin-timeline movies keeps Pine from going as deeply into the character as Shatner did, he still leaves a lasting impression. Pine’s performances showcase his charisma and intensity, and they have brought out a

really good looking

new Kirk for a new generation, making him a worthy second in this ranking.

The future of the film series might be up in the air at the moment, but we’re hoping that Pine will indeed be able to return for that long-awaited Star Trek 4, because he really is a great Captain Kirk.

1. William Shatner

Appeared in: Star Trek: The Original Series, Original film series

William Shatner’s name is almost inseparable from the Captain James T. Kirk character and it’s easy to see why. His theatrical acting style made him a perfect fit for Star Trek and he truly embodied the character in Star Trek: The Original Series.

Although Shatner’s Kirk has been teased for being overly dramatic, it’s that fact alone that made the character so unforgettable and contributed to Star Trek‘s success. Shatner gave different character interpretations excellently, keeping Kirk’s flavor consistent throughout his time with the role. His distinct portrayal continued into the Star Trek films with a more grounded and mature version of Kirk. His best film performance was arguably in Wrath of Khan, where he played a softer, older Kirk, who was also a bit less confident than his younger self.

Through extensive screen time in both TV and films, Shatner has indelibly etched himself into the character of James T. Kirk, with his version becoming the quintessential interpretation of the role.

Whether you agree with this ranking or not, it’s an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan. With Chris Pine hopefully set to reprise his role in another Star Trek film and Paul Wesley continuing to impress in Strange New Worlds, the journey of Kirk promises to thrill audiences for years to come.

Which version of Captain James T. Kirk is your favorite in the Star Trek saga?
