DC’s Legends of Tomorrow travels to the Old West where we meet another DC hero — Jonah Hex.

“The Magnificent Eight” — the eleventh episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has the team visiting the Old West to hide out from the Hunters. Along the way, they meet Jonah Hex and also decide to save a town from marauding bandits. The episode played much like a spaghetti western and didn’t take itself too seriously. There were also some nice twists and surprises that kept the episode’s momentum going.

Legendary Recap: The Waverider arrives in 1871 Salvation. It’s been a rough ride due to the amount of time they needed to travel through, which causes everyone to have some pretty drastic, yet humorous side-effects. Rip is using this time period for its fragmentation — a temporal blindspot — which can hide them from the Hunters. The team, though, is excited to explore. After some arguing with Rip, the former Time Master allows them to leave the ship, albeit, dressed in more period-appropriate clothing and armed with some less conspicuous weapons.

The team arrives in the town of Salvation and heads straight to the saloon. Kendra accidentally bumps in a woman and has a strange vision. The mysterious woman soon disappears.

Leonard and Martin play cards with two men. When one of the men isn’t happy that Martin won, he takes it out on a waitress. Martin comes to her defense which causes the man to draw his weapon. Leonard shoots the man dead just in time, saving Martin. The situation causes the friends of the dead man to start a bar fight. A man in the shadows finally stands and fires his weapon in the air, ending the brawl. He introduces himself as Jonah Hex, who immediately knows that they’re from the future and asks to see Rip.

The team brings him aboard the Waverider. We learn that Rip’s famous trench coat was actually a gift from Jonah. Jonah tells Rip that the Legends’ little fiasco has drawn the ire of the Stillwater Gang. Ray wants to play hero and save the town.

Kendra heads off to find the woman she ran into. A curious Sara tags along.

Ray goes to the local jail and introduces himself to the sheriff, offering his help. The sheriff, who immensely fears the gang, gives his badge to Ray, who is now the new town sheriff.

Martin goes to the saloon to ask the bartender about Jeb Stillwater, the leader of the gang. There, he sees a crying woman, Anna, and learns that her son is dying. Anna brings Martin home where he learns that her son has tuberculosis.

The Stillwater Gang arrives into town and threatens the Legends for the killing of a member of their gang. Ray introduces himself, but Jeb quickly draws his gun. Leonard, perched in one of the buildings, shoots Jeb’s gun out from his hand. Ray commands them to leave and the gang reluctantly complies.

Jonah is worried that the day the Legends leave, the town will end up like Calvert. As Jonah goes off to speak with Rip, the team researches Calvert. They find out that Jonah is referring to Calvert, Oklahoma, where another gang was thought to have been chased out by Rip during a past visit. The gang actually returned to Calvert after Rip left, and burned it to the ground.

Rip and Ray interrupt Martin as he’s stealing medication from the infirmary. Rip warns Martin about messing with the timeline. Martin brings up Calvert and we learn that Rip had difficulty leaving that time period — he was drawn to it like how Ray was drawn to 1958. Rip loved his time in the Old West so much that he named his son after Jonah Hex. When Rip finally left, Quentin Turnbull and his gang attacked Calvert. Martin, still adamant in saving Anna’s son, tells Rip that he never wants that type of regret.

Sara and Kendra finally arrive at an isolated cabin. The woman appears and holds a rifle to them. They soon learn that the woman is an older incarnation of Kendra. The three have a conversation and Kendra learns that Carter is her only love. If she tries to fall in love with anybody else, it’ll end in tragedy and heartbreak.

Martin cures the boy of his tuberculosis. He tells the thankful Anna to burn the rest of the medicine once he leaves.

Ray, Mick, Jax, Leonard, and Jonah find the Stillwater Gang’s camp and launch an attack. The team leaves after capturing Jeb, but Jax is taken by one of the gang members.

Back on the Waverider, Martin suggest trading Jeb for Jax. Ray knows that if they release Jeb, the Stillwater gang will attack the town once the second they depart. Jonah proposes a quick draw.  If Ray wins, they get Jax back. If Ray loses, they set Jeb free. Rip finally reveals that he actually knew what was going to happen to Calvert. Because he was a Time Master, he was morally oblicated to not change the past. However, this time, he’s no longer a Time Master, so he proposes that he be the one to do the quick draw.

Arriving back on the Waverider, Sara comforts Kendra and tells her that her other incarnation never met Ray, so she can’t say if she truly loves Ray or not. Since her other self had already lived her life, it’s time for her to live her own.

The Legends arrive in town and Rip and Jeb have their quick draw. Jeb loses the quick draw and his team consequently leaves. Suddenly, the Hunters arrive, prompting the Legends to reveal their powers in order to engage them. The victory is swift. However, before one of the Hunters dies, he reveals to Mick that the Time Masters have sent the Pilgrim.

Rip says his goodbye to Jonah, and tells Leonard that he isn’t worried about having their technology and powers exposed to the town, because skepticism will always win. Martin learns that the boy whose life he saved is the future H.G. Wells.

Kendra has a heart-to-heart with Ray and tells him that she’s going to follow her heart and not listen to her other incarnation. She renews her love for Ray and is willing to take a chance.

Mick warns the team that the Time Masters have initiated the Omega Protocol — sending their deadliest assassin, the Pilgrim, after them. She won’t be hunting them, but hunting their younger selves.

Flashing to 1990, we see a house on fire and a boy sitting in the distance admiring his work, which gives away that this boy is Mick. Unaware, young Mick is shot and executed by a woman from behind.

Legendary Moment(s): The team hilariously arriving in Salvation and having their slo-mo heroic walk, along with a Western-style version of their theme.

Thoughts for Tomorrow: The Hunters seemed to be dispatched a bit too quickly. From what Mick said in the last episode “Progeny,” I thought they were going to be impossible to beat. If Martin saved H.G. Wells and also suggested the name of “H.G.,” does that mean most of the Legends’ activities have already happened? They’re just recreating destiny. On a humorous note, I’m predicting that there will be a drinking game that revolves around the number of times Rip has been punched in the face.
