Bizarro World

First Appearance: Action Comics #263

Notable Characters: Bizarros. Lots of Bizarros.

If I could sum up the Silver Age of super hero comics in one phrase, I’d say it took every concept to its ridiculous extreme. Thus, it’s not enough to have one imperfect copy of Superman as Bizarro. Nope, not when you can have a whole planet of them.

This world is home to what is probably the best known version of Bizarro, meaning the one with pasty white skin, angular features and his endearing/annoying speech pattern where he reverses the meanings of certain words. Sometimes he was a villain, and other times merely misunderstood and kind of pitiful. On Bizarro World, some aspects of normal human culture are also reversed, and Bizarro’s normal looking son is an outcast the same way Bizarro is on Earth.

He’s also affected by different colors of Kryptonite than Superman, etc. Normally, you’d think that having a weird flawed version of Superman would be pretty dangerous, especially when the survival of your world might depend on you being able to beat him. But consider this: is Bizarro even going to play along with Brainiac and Telos’ game, or might he do the opposite and refuse to participate?

Makes you wonder …
