Supergirl Had A Batman Reference

In this Monday’s episode, Supergirl mentions a vigilante that definitely fits the description of the Dark Knight

It happened again. In the season two premiere of Supergirl, there was a direct reference to the city Batman defends, with a random bystander claiming they should “move back to Gotham”. Sure it’s just a throwaway joke, but it clearly establishes that Gotham exists in the Supergirl universe. Greg Berlanti actually has a long history of using things like Easter eggs and throwaway lines to establish that characters and places really exist in the universe and actually use them at a later date. So naturally this led to lots of speculation that yes Gotham exists in the world of Supergirl, and if Gotham exists, so must Batman.

More flame was added to the fire with the addition of Maggie Sawyer to the cast. Maggie Sawyer is linked to Batwoman, who is a major Batman ally. None of this has been brought up in the show, but it could be at some point.

But tonight’s episode actually had the most direct reference to the Caped Crusader yet. In the episode, Supergirl talks about her cousin Superman having previously worked with a certain vigilante:

"My cousin worked with a vigilante once. Tons of gadgets, lots of demons."

That definitely sounds like Batman, right? I mean Technically Supergirl exists in the Arrowverse, so that description also fits Oliver Queen, but National City and Metropolis exist in another Earth, so that seems super unlikely.

Does that mean Batman is coming to the CW? Well, not anytime soon, as the producers have repeatedly said they have their hands full with the current slate of shows and various crossovers they are doing. But what it could be totally doing is building to us seeing Batman on a CW show sometime in the future.
