How Black Lightning can avoid the season 2 slump

Stay close to the pulse of Black Culture

My favorite part of Black Lightning is the way they’ve approached Black Culture. In episode 1, Jefferson was harassed by the police for being a black man. He didn’t even fit the description of the suspect. That moment addressed the issue of police brutality. The series continued with Jefferson using quotes from prominent Black figures throughout the series. And the music was usually something that always seemed to fit the scene. They always seemed to address things that make people of color happy or sad without coming off as preachy or too woke.

The last part is key. There were plenty of scenes throughout the show that displayed things that go on in the news. Since the issues weren’t used to push down anyone, the show wasn’t criticized for the stances it took on topics like police brutality, corruption in the government, and being Black in America. The upcoming season should keep doing exactly that. Show the world how it looks from the inside without making people feel intimidated or looked down upon. They did an amazing job in season 1 and I expect more of the same in season two.
