Harley Quinn: The 10 best moments from season 2
By Mark Lynch
2. The death of Mr. Freeze episode
Episode: “Thawing Hearts“
Most of the selections on this slideshow are funny or entertaining. This isn’t one of them.
“Thawing Hearts” itself wasn’t without its funny moments: Kite Man went up against his most dangerous enemy Condiment King for a wedding venue, King Shark and Clayface mistook Mr. Freeze for famous pop stars, Harley Quinn made art… with a flamethrower. These were just some of the parts that left the viewers laughing, but that laughter went away in the final couple of minutes of the episode.
Harley and her gang were set to kill Mr. Freeze for putting her on ice, but the quickly found themselves easily captured. While being imprisoned, they found out that Freeze actually saved Harley’s life. The other villains wanted to kill her because their frail, misogynistic egos were intimidated by Harley being so good.
In order to stay alive, Harley made a deal: If Ivy could save the life of Freeze’s wife, he’d let them live. This was a gift and a curse. Ivy did save her life, but it cost Freeze his. A decision he gladly made.
It’s doubtful anyone expected this moment to be this sad. Like his superior incarnation in Batman: The Animated Series, Freeze was only a bad guy in name, but that didn’t make him evil – everything he did was out of love. And we found out how true this was with his sacrifice.
This was easily the saddest moment of the series.
